Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard have reunited for a new collaborative single titled ‘Back In The Game’. The frontman of Radiohead and The Smile last collaborated with the ‘90s electronic legend nine years ago on the 2016 track ‘Beautiful People’, which appeared on Pritchard’s solo album, ‘Under The Sun’. This new song showcases their experimental style, featuring Yorke's vocals—processed through an H910 Harmonizer, one of the earliest devices for digital audio effects—flowing over a glitchy and immersive electronic backdrop. ‘Back In The Game’ is also accompanied by a surreal music video directed by Jonathan Zawada, featuring flamboyantly dressed masked figures parading through the streets. Regarding the idea behind the visual, Zawada stated, “Upon hearing the original demo of ‘Back In The Game’, I was captivated by the chaotic bassline that reminded me of the final scene in Staying Alive, where John Travolta struts confidently through the streets of New York, yet I envisioned it with a more menacing twist.
“Gradually, a vision emerged featuring a character with a large parade head, frozen in a manic expression, making it unclear whether their incessant march was aggressive or celebratory. “Ultimately, the video for ‘Back In The Game’ illustrates a form of blind celebration occurring as civilization crumbles around it, illustrating a kind of advancement through decline. It also delves into how and where we place value in our shared cultural expressions and how we navigate significant cultural changes in the 21st century.” Take a look for yourself below…
