Self Esteem is here to add some excitement to February 14th with her fiery new single '69'.
The UK's most candid pop artist returns, this time with a focus on lovemaking. The lyrics of '69' read like annotations from the Kama Sutra, exploring flexible bodies and delightful experiences.
However, there’s one thing Self Esteem just can’t seem to grasp – yes, it's '69'.
The throbbing, robust, and seductive electronics complement her intoxicating vocals, featuring contributions from LA drag sensation Meatball. In the chorus, Self Esteem sings:
“The one thing I hate, because I can’t focus, no I just can’t stand, yeah I’ve never the time, to 69…”
“I’ve always wanted to create a song that enumerates sex positions and evaluates them,” shares Self Esteem, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor. “Much of my music expresses what I find difficult to articulate in person. I love the idea of directly stating your desires in a quick, three-minute house track. It also holds a political angle – women are still expected to please others sexually; I can’t bear to hear another conversation about ‘faking it,’ it frustrates me too much! There is already enough inequity in the male/female relationship. Our bodies endure so much more pain and distress; please let us enjoy pleasure where we can!”
“I had already composed the song, and then a few months later, my favorite drag queen Meatball echoed a similar sentiment on her podcast, Sloppy Seconds, and I knew it had to be included in the album!”
The video features a group therapy session that transitions into an imaginative dance sequence – typical of Self Esteem’s incredible pop artistry.
