Irish band takes another significant step forward...

Experiencing Fontaines D.C. over the past few months has been akin to observing a surfer at the peak of a wave—perfectly poised, advancing into new territory. The Irish band has not made a misstep; their XL debut, ‘Romance,’ is remarkable, harnessing the emotional depth of their songwriting while expanding ambitiously in both reach and execution.
‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ adds a new chapter to this journey. Sonically linked to the album, the guitar work showcases those impeccable 90s influences, while the blend of light and shadow hints at gothic elements. Yet, there’s a trace of something fresh here, a sense of musicians diverging, creating something novel.
Now available, ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ arrives just as the initial signs of spring begin to emerge, despite winter's lingering grip. The song encapsulates a dynamic tension – the lyrics celebrate the naivety of youth, even as they recognize the performance aspect involved. Nevertheless, the performance still exists; there’s a subtle defiance in the verse, wrapped in an almost self-aware vocal delivery, leading up to an emphatic, crowd-pleasing finale.
Almost perfectly crafted for their amazing live performances—remember, Finsbury Park is on schedule for this summer—Fontaines D.C.'s latest offering carries a certain poignancy. With Grian Chatten singing “sometimes I wake up and it’s dark / perform the ritual that puts me in the part,” there’s a sense of exhaustion and boredom. “Seems like they’re never gonna understand” highlights the gap between the performer and the audience, pointing out how that sense of connection during concerts can often feel superficial.
Yet, amidst it all, an understanding of music's power prevails. While ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ may reference the “cast that brings you down,” the title is firmly rooted in that first-person narrative—through the highs and lows, it ultimately remains worthwhile in the long run.
