Ignite my spirit, I’m lost in the shadows. Rushmere, restless souls in the end…

      * * *

The original "stomp and holler" band from Britain is back, sounding better than ever.

With the release of "Rushmere" in mid-January, Mumford & Sons not only presented their first song in a year (since January ‘24’s "Good People" with Pharrell), but they also revealed their upcoming studio album of the 2020s: RUSHMERE, the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2018’s Delta, set to be released on March 28th via Glassnote.

      Rushmere – Mumford & Sons

Don’t you long for the breathlessness

      The wildness in your gaze?

Return home late in the morning light

      Bloodshot dreams beneath streetlight enchantments

      A truth that remains untold

And I was still a mystery to myself.

"Rushmere" is a folk rock fever dream that feels as refreshing as it is timeless, striking a beautiful chord with the band’s roots – both musically and metaphorically. It was near Rushmere Pond on Wimbledon Common in southwest London where Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane decided to form a band.

And what finer way to honor your origin story than by revisiting the sounds that initially inspired you? Casual listeners might easily mistake "Rushmere" for a lost track from Sigh No More, the band’s multi-platinum debut. There is a clear connection between the new song and now-classic hits like "Little Lion Man," "The Cave," and "I Will Wait." Sixteen years later, the acoustic guitars still jingle, the banjos resonate, and Marcus Mumford’s earthy voice remains charged with undeniable raw emotion, intensity, and longing.

Within the chorus, the band discovers both a musical and emotional release – a dramatic, cathartic peak that’s as nostalgic and reflective as it is present in the moment. Mumford & Sons transport us back to their beginnings, cherishing the memories while harnessing the same energy that fueled them in their early days.

It’s lively, personal, exhilarating, and beautifully human:

Ignite my spirit, I’m lost in the shadows.

Rushmere, restless souls in the end.

Lift my gaze from the ground.

      Time won’t disappoint us again.

This is folk rock at its finest; a nod to Mumford & Sons’ history, ingrained with their essence, while still feeling like an exciting new beginning – which it undoubtedly is.

Ultimately, "Rushmere" is the ideal reintroduction to Mumford & Sons – a reminder of why the world first fell in love with them nearly two decades ago, and a testament to their lasting ability to capture our attention and affection.

Take me back to desolate lawns

      And nowhere else to wander.

You say, “Get lost in the fairground crowd”

Where no one knows your name.

      There are only honest errors.

There’s no cost to a wasted hour.

Well, ignite my spirit, I’m lost in the shadows.

Rushmere, restless souls in the end.

And lift my gaze from the ground.

      Time won’t disappoint us again.
