On February 27, 2025, Only The Poets return with their new single, ‘I Keep On Messing It Up.’
The four-member band recently performed an incredibly intimate show at the iconic Scala venue in Kings Cross, London. The event sold out immediately, inviting fans to “experience the future” as they unveiled eight new songs live for the first time.
Their latest single, ‘I Keep On Messing It Up,’ is now available and precedes an extensive tour of Europe this Spring.
This song serves as a moment of introspection, marking a new chapter for Only The Poets—it addresses themes of a break-up and the process of gathering the shattered pieces.
Written by Tommy Longhurst after a period of self-examination, the track sees the band collaborating with fellow Reading artist, renowned songwriter and producer, Dandlion for the first time.
With a pop-infused indie sound reminiscent of the early days of The 1975, the song exudes a vibrant energy—the upbeat melodies contrast with the darker undertones of the lyrics.
“The title reveals it all; there’s a sense of self-sabotage at play,” Tommy explains about the inspiration behind the track. “I went through another relationship ending and reflected on certain patterns, then I began to explore not just my relationships but my entire life.”
“I entered the studio that day feeling the need to express what was inside me. Writing the song wasn't easy; it’s tough to face the fact that you keep messing things up. What I really appreciate about this song—and why we chose to release it first—is the contrast; the lyrics have a darker undertone, yet the music is lively and bright, and it feels optimistic. It represents a fresh direction for us.”
