Malcolm Todd and Omar Apollo's "Bleed" Offers a Danceable Exploration of Heartbreak and Strength - Atwood Magazine

Malcolm Todd and Omar Apollo present an enchanting fusion of alternative rock and R&B with their track "Bleed," a lively song that addresses themes of heartbreak, control, and self-expression, while highlighting the duo's strong connection.

As spring arrives, so does fresh music from Malcolm Todd. After receiving widespread acclaim, the emerging artist recently unveiled the second single from his eagerly awaited self-titled album. Released on February 28 through Columbia Records, “Bleed,” featuring Omar Apollo, signifies the dawn of a new chapter filled with alternative rock and R&B hits from Todd. The two artists connected when Todd was the opening act for Apollo during the God Said No tour, and they have remained close since.

“Omar was the first person I thought of when the idea for ‘Bleed’ began,” Todd revealed to Atwood Magazine. “Collaborating with him was a dream come true. From listening to his music in high school to opening for him on tour, and now releasing a song together, it’s been incredible. He encouraged me greatly while we worked on this song.”

The opening verse delves into the notion of wearing a facade, suggesting that the person being described is attempting to be someone they're not. These lyrics develop throughout the track, highlighting the idea of control – whether over the songwriters or in their own lives.

“Bleed” captures the ebb and flow of love, transitioning from a peak to a low, vulnerable state of heartbreak. Todd’s lyrics illustrate surrendering the control of one’s heart to another person, culminating in emotional pain.

In the newly released music video for "Bleed," director Aidan Cullen portrays the physical aspect of this pain through engaging fight scenes. The combination of lyrics and imagery weaves a compelling narrative that enhances the song's powerful message. To make a heart bleed, it must be gravely wounded – a trauma that one might never fully heal from. By integrating this metaphor into the song, Todd ensures that every line strikes a deep emotional chord.

"'Bleed' originated from the idea of crafting a song solely for dancing," Todd explains. "I had never attempted that before. It started off as a bit of a joke. But as we developed the song, the premise evolved into something meaningful. It improved significantly and now stands as one of my favorite tracks on the upcoming album."

Omar Apollo’s contribution to the verse enhances the danceable essence of the song as it transitions back into the chorus. Given their collaboration, it’s no surprise that listeners feel compelled to move to the rhythm.

Along with the release of "Bleed," Malcolm Todd announced his plans for a tour to support his upcoming album. The Wholesome Rockstar tour is set to commence in May, shortly after the release of the eponymous album on April 4. As Todd embarks on this new journey, "Bleed" establishes the mood for what lies ahead – revealing vulnerability, embracing control, and inviting listeners to join him every step of the way.
