The latest EP by DD Allen bursts with raw emotion and vibrant energy. Appropriately embracing the title of Rebel Hero is a daring choice, yet one cannot help but cheer for the British singer/songwriter as he navigates through six lively tracks, exploring themes of love and loss, freedom, brotherhood, and the hope that comes with a fresh start. Allen’s autobiographical and deeply human performances resonate with universal experiences, especially in the EP's opening number: a powerful and uplifting anthem, “I See You in the Dark,” which captures his journey toward closure in the past and optimism for the future.

Between the ocean and the City

      Lies our hometown

      She acquires a stunning dress

      As she surveys around

He notices the dust in the sun rays

      Of his sorrow

      He twirls through the subways

      Of tomorrow

It's a unique world for the brother

      who stands beside you

But it’s one for the money

and two for the waves that we surf

Atwood Magazine is thrilled to debut “I See You in the Dark (alternative version),” the dynamic opening track from DD Allen’s recently launched Rebel Hero EP. This energetic reimagining of Allen’s 2020 single carries a bolder, louder, and slightly more unruly vibe, featuring updated production and an enhanced lead guitar line that adds extra depth and dramatic flair to Allen's moment of reflection and determination.

The songwriter reaches a peak emotional intensity in the chorus, his restrained feelings erupting into a cathartic and captivating climax:

      You left too soon

      You’ll return someday

      I see in the dark,

      and you’re coming my way

I don’t know where to look

I don’t know what to say

I see you in the dark,

      and you’re coming my way

“When relationships come to an end, you're left with memories and the images that flash before your eyes whenever you close them,” Allen shares with Atwood Magazine. “For some, there’s always hope that things may change someday; hope is incredibly powerful. That’s ‘I See You in The Dark.’ It reflects a remarkable period of my life.”

“We crafted this rendition of the song with greater energy and momentum. As time progresses, you realize it's essential to move forward, and I wanted that energy to shine through in the song.”

There is a touch of irony in Allen delving into his past body of work to move forward, but the outcome speaks volumes – we commend an artist willing to experiment with their creations. “I See You in the Dark (alt)” is electrifying and gritty, relentless and brilliant; a rock anthem designed for arenas, built on enduring themes that have propelled humanity ‘onward and upward’ for generations. With each ending comes a new beginning; the story continues even when the cast or the stage transforms.

Once again, Allen conveys this truth through pounding drums, charged guitars, and an unwavering belief in the extraordinary workings of the world. The result is an irresistibly charming and uplifting rendition poised to be enjoyed, celebrated, and replayed endlessly.

I hear the echoes on the back streets

      It’s all about wealth

Where the abandoned fill the back seats

      Of life itself

What I’d give to have her back

      Just to embrace her

Yet my love remains unseen through the rain

      And I yearn for her

It's a unique world for the brother

      who stands by your side

But it’s one for the money

and two for the waves that we ride

      You left too soon

      You’ll return someday

      I see in the dark,

      and you’re coming my way

I don’t know where to look

I don’t know what to say

I see you in the dark,

      and you’re coming my way

The best part? This track is just one of six amazing songs from the freshly released Rebel Hero.

“Lockdown heavily influenced Rebel Hero – dealing with collective despair, depression, and alcohol,” Allen reveals. “Yet, amidst the monotony, anxiety, and unpredictability, I found inspiration in Huey Morgan’s book, Rebel Heroes – those stories about past renegades like Jimi, Janis, Cass Elliot, and Amy offered a much-needed escape. I began to understand what it means to appreciate freedom, love, companionship, hope, and nostalgia. The album serves as my way of expressing these human emotions back to my audience; I hope it conveys what it
