There are few things that can hinder K-pop boy group NCT 127.

For those who may not know, NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology, and 127 signifies the longitude of their home city, Seoul, South Korea. Since adopting this name to represent their city, the octet has carried a piece of home to every performance, including their concert at Prudential Center. Their show on March 2nd not only marked the second stop of the Neo City – The Momentum tour but also celebrated the 100th concert of their career.

Since their debut in 2016, NCT’s impact on the industry has been undeniable. Frequently criticized for producing what some label as ‘noise music,’ they have embraced these critiques. It’s commendable—throughout their discography, these members remain authentically themselves, making the electro hip-hop track ‘Gas’ an ideal opener for the evening.

It’s clear that these gentlemen go full throttle without hesitation. They elevate the energy further by following up with ‘Faster’ and ‘Bring the Noize,’ which feature samples of revving engines, sharp whistles, and clattering metal.

Experiencing NCT 127 perform live is truly a delight. With leader Taeyong and vocalist Jaehyun currently serving in the military, the remaining members rise to the challenge of stepping in for them and deliver an outstanding performance effortlessly.

Once the lights illuminate the stage, members Johnny, Yuta, Doyoung, Jungwoo, Mark, and Haechan find it challenging to introduce themselves due to the roaring cheers of the fans, affectionately known as NCTzens. These devoted supporters bring their own fandom energy, with many holding the group's official fanlight, transforming the venue into a vibrant sea of neon green.

For many, NCT 127 represents dazzling neon-green lights, chaotic melodies, and loud synths; yet, for every track that commands attention with its flamboyance, there is an equally compelling song in their repertoire that showcases R&B excellence in K-pop. The opening notes of ‘Designer’ may mislead listeners into thinking it’s just another hip-hop song, but it quickly shifts to R&B, offering a glimpse into another facet of their discography.

      —

The track ‘Orange Seoul’ begins with a warm vinyl crackle, evolving into a brilliant jazz-influenced R&B piece that allows both rappers and vocalists to shine. A few songs later, vocalist Doyoung playfully engages the audience regarding their reaction to ‘Sticker.’ He is all smiles, though his teasing is justified: the song divides listeners with its striking recorder melody, and has since become a staple in their collection.

Highlights of the night include a dramatic black-and-white film-style rendition of ‘Rain Drop’ and ‘Whiplash,’ which makes its return to the stage after a single performance in 2018. Concluding with an encore of ‘Dreams Come True’ and ‘Promise You,’ the members gather for their final words, reflecting on their gratitude for celebrating their 100th show with fans that night.

NCT 127 has always been pioneers, even if they occasionally walked their journey alone. Throughout their careers, they have set new standards that many have been hesitant to emulate. They are fortunate to have formed a close bond with each other, which has only deepened over time.

It is essential to expect the unexpected from NCT: they are innovators in their own right, and their continuous creativity will surely leave a lasting impact on the industry.
