To be frank, an album titled ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)’ demands a deep commitment, and that's precisely what Japanese Breakfast has delivered with her striking new release. As we welcome her to the DIY cover for the first time, Michelle Zauner discusses how she managed to rebuild after the significant achievements of her 2021 album ‘Jubilee’ and her New York Times best-selling memoir Crying In H Mart. She gives us a glimpse into the contemplative sadness that influenced her new work. “In a way, melancholy is my innate form,” she reveals in our cover story, reflecting on the profound impact her mother's passing has had on her artistry. “I don’t think my grief will ever be over, but in some respects, it feels like it’s come full circle. I’ve allowed myself to experience happiness, and I’ve also permitted myself to feel sad about other things. Particularly as someone in her mid-30s, sadness has evolved; it’s not the intense heartbreak, jealousy, or longing it once was; instead, it embodies a thoughtful melancholy about the passage of time.” However, life is ultimately about balance, and in our March 2025 issue, we also explore the lighter side, featuring the vibrant debut album from Hastings trio HotWax and uncovering the new phase of SASAMI as a genuine Main Pop Girl. Additionally, we embark on a road trip to Goldenhammer with Divorce to celebrate their debut; contemplate existence with Perfume Genius as he nears the release of his seventh album ‘Glory’; and dust off our cowboy boots to welcome our favorite new country duo, Julien Baker & TORRES. In our new music-focused Neu section, South London’s Sam Akpro offers insight into his atmospheric debut album ‘Evenfall’, while our introduce segments with rising stars Welly and Esme Emerson indicate that the future of indie-pop is indeed secure. Plus, we reconnect with DIY favorite™ Matt Maltese for our latest In Deep profile, celebrate BRITs Week in style with Rachel Chinouriri’s recent War Child performance, and provide our DIY takes on new albums from Greentea Peng, The Horrors, clipping, and several others.
