Chappell Roan has made a vibrant return with her new single ‘The Giver’—her first release since ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ propelled her to global mainstream fame last year, and also marks her initial venture into country music. Following in the footsteps of Beyoncé, whose recent album ‘COWBOY CARTER’ reshaped common perceptions of the genre, this latest track from the Midwest Princess blends traditional country elements—such as fiddle-driven instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics—into a remarkably catchy pop anthem, challenging the genre’s historically heteronormative ties with her distinctive sapphic twist. “I hold a very special place in my heart for country music,” Chappell—who is set to headline Reading and Leeds this summer—has stated. “I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus, surrounded by it at bonfires, grocery stores, and karaoke bars.” The song is also accompanied by an advert-like video showcasing her transformation into various characters—a lawyer, a dentist, a builder, a plumber, and a private investigator—all of whom embody the essence of giving, much like the song itself. Additionally, the video opens with a computer menu featuring five phrases, including ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ and ‘The Giver’; the other three—‘To Be Yours’, ‘Read & Make Out’, and ‘The Subway’—might hint at future singles. Regarding speculation about her upcoming music, she hinted: “Many people have asked if this means I’m making a country album??? My answer is… right now I’m just creating songs that make me feel happy and fun, and ‘The Giver’ is my take on cuntry xoxo. May the classic country divas lead their genre; I’m just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for y’all.” You can watch the official lyric video for ‘The Giver’ and check out our review of Chappell’s 2023 debut album below.
