Smerz Announces Upcoming Album ‘Big City Life’

Norwegian duo Smerz – Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg – will launch their second album, ‘Big city life’, on May 23rd through Escho.

Developed and created by Smerz over the past four years, ‘Big city life’ consists of a series of moments and emotions, portraying stories – both experienced and imagined – centered around themes of “apathy, loneliness, self-conversation, love, and an overwhelming, almost manic sense of freedom.”

Together, these elements create a sonic journey. “Some of the tracks serve as advice for ourselves. Others act as gateways to dreams. A few express secret desires. Some are meant for those who aren’t present anymore. And some predict what’s to come,” Smerz detail.

After the release of the ballad ‘A thousand lies’, Smerz presents another glimpse of the album with ‘You got time and I got money’; a minimalist mid-tempo track inspired by delicate fragments of a phantom romance and a previous existence. “I wrote the lyrics when I got my first real adult job and was in love at the same time,” shares Catharina regarding the string-infused piece.

This track exemplifies the duo’s wandering style, shaped by their expertise in various creative fields, including music production, songwriting, performance, theater, and classical composition. Since their 2021 album ‘Believer’, Smerz has maintained their long-standing NTS Radio residency, serving as “a playground for their wide-ranging influences, where they feature friends and music they admire, mixing everything from Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin to footwork innovator RP Boo.”

Capturing the thrill of love, the video for ‘You got time and I got money’ was created with longtime collaborators Benjamin Barron and Bror August Vestbø. It showcases a dreamlike montage of fireworks, massive waves, fountains, and Smerz performing as if in a fictional TV segment.
