It's a Wild World: CLASH Collaborates with Sugababes

Sugababes represent a unique name in British pop music. The evolution of Mutya, Keisha, and Siobhan from youthful dreamers to chart-topping stars produced some iconic hits, helping to redefine the girl group format to reflect their essence. Their quest to reunite and assert ownership of their name is a powerful narrative, and with a new generation embracing their timeless songs, Sugababes appear to be more popular than ever.

Last summer, they stirred up excitement at Glastonbury with one of the festival's standout performances, and recently, they made a memorable appearance at the BRIT Awards, where they presented JADE with her well-deserved solo award.

Their new single 'Jungle' followed — a grand synth-pop anthem deeply embedded in their impressive legacy, it’s already being hailed as a classic.

CLASH caught up with Sugababes for a brief chat during a lull in their tour rehearsals, offering a glimpse into their hectic lives.

Congratulations on your fantastic new single ‘Jungle’ — how does it feel to have it released?

Mutya: Oh my God, it’s incredible! Yesterday felt like the start of something new. It was reminiscent of when we first began releasing music… I was just so excited!

Siobhan: It’s great to have fresh music out there… and we have a collection of songs that we’re truly excited about. The reaction has exceeded our expectations. We never approach this thinking that everyone will adore us! The feedback has been really positive.

Keisha: You write something, and although you may love it at first, you might return to it and feel differently. With this one, though, we returned to it and loved it! Hearing it for the first time on the radio is like experiencing it through someone else’s ears. I tuned in to Radio 2 for its first play, and it sounded amazing!

The response has been incredible! Do you pay attention to social media comments…?

      Mutya: Well…

Siobhan: For this particular single, I did. I wanted to see what people were saying. But I made a rule a long time ago. Having grown up in the public eye, I realized that I took every comment to heart. So, I told my friends and family that even if the feedback was fantastic, I didn’t want to know! I don’t understand what’s good or bad about me. Plus, it’s scientifically shown that we tend to focus on negative comments! It only takes one. So, I don’t read comments anymore, and it has transformed my life. It keeps me grounded.

Mutya: I can’t resist reading them! It’s intriguing to see the public's opinions.

Siobhan: I’m the worst when it comes to social media. I don’t have time for it. When I’m home, I’m just being a mum, so that’s my focus. But overall, I see a lot of positivity directed towards us, and that’s truly wonderful.

I caught your Glastonbury performance last year, and it was phenomenal — a complete showstopper! Do you carry that energy into the studio?

Keisha: It’s wonderful, but you have to be genuinely inspired by the art itself! The industry is incredibly fickle and challenging to navigate. For us, we release music because we love it. When we have a good writing session, we can feel it. Our motivation isn’t primarily driven by how people perceive us; we just hope they enjoy it.

Mutya: We rely on our instincts regarding our music and try not to heed outside opinions.

Siobhan: It’s an odd situation in the industry now, where artists feel pressured to release frequently, which can lead to negativity. We choose to ignore that pressure! We say: we’ll release when we’re ready, hoping people will still support us. Fortunately, the support has been incredible! We concentrate on that, rather than external influences.

The single pays homage to the past while looking toward the future — are you mindful of navigating that impressive catalogue?

Siobhan: Keisha and I are somewhat in sync yet also saying different things! I’m aware of it because our setlist is fantastic, and we want the new music to fit in. Otherwise, after a while, you might be unsure where it belongs. I feel ‘Jungle’ fits perfectly in our setlists, and that's crucial because the live performance aspect of our work is everything.

Keisha: I agree, but I’d add that most tracks we create tend to sound like a Sugababes song, regardless of genre. It’s about the harmonies. Our harmonies are our defining characteristic. So no matter what we produce, that essence is always there!

Are you planning a full project? Could we dare to assume an album…?

Siobhan: Definitely. It's not entirely completed yet, but we have a strong foundation for it
