Today, alt-pop musician Carlie Hanson presents a unique playlist titled “The Hottest of the Hot” as part of Atwood Magazine’s Women’s History Month series!
Hanson remarks, “This playlist features a mix of incredible female artists that I have been enjoying lately. It includes some timeless classics along with newer tracks. I adore it all! I believe it showcases the diverse styles of rock and pop influences that inspire me and my own music.”
Carlie Hanson’s music embodies the essence of drying tears, solidifying acceptance, and nurturing confidence. The alternative pop singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Wisconsin channels raw emotions through a blend of sharp Gen-Z empathy, maturity beyond her age, and a talent for crafting timeless songs. Originating from Onalaska, WI, Carlie made her breakthrough at the age of 17 with the release of “Only One” in 2017, earning a prestigious endorsement when Taylor Swift included the song in an Apple Music playlist of favorites. It ultimately garnered over 77 million streams on Spotify.
The emerging artist continued her ascent with tracks like “Us,” “Mood,” “Toxins,” “Numb,” and “Back In My Arms,” which collectively amassed over 25 million streams. She stands out as a rare talent who feels equally at home performing alongside Yungblud, Troye Sivan, or Kim Petras. Her evolution is evident in her works, ‘Tough Boy’ [2022] and ‘Wisconsin’ [2023]. Alternative Press described ‘Wisconsin’ as “an engaging tribute to growing up in the Midwest and her journey to Los Angeles.”
After achieving hundreds of millions of streams and widespread acclaim, her 2025 debut EP for Fearless Records, too late to cry, reflects a significant musical and personal transformation. Parting ways with her former label and restructuring her team, Carlie meticulously crafted the EP in her Los Angeles apartment. By mustering the strength to lift her gaze and press forward through adversities, she motivates her audience to do the same.

“Strangers” – Ethel Cain
I am in awe of this song. It takes me on a journey, and that intense bridge where she sings “am I making you feel sick” always makes me feel like my world is collapsing in a beautifully romantic way. It’s hard to put into words—it's truly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
“For My Lover” – Tracy Chapman
I’ve been listening to Tracy Chapman since I was very young, thanks to my mom. She has a timeless voice and is an incredible lyricist. This is one of my favorite tracks from her self-titled album.

Sky Ferreira is one of the reigning queens of music. This track is a total banger with an outstanding production, and that chorus hits hard.
“Into Your Garden” – 070 Shake ft. JT
The first time I heard this song, it felt like I was in a movie. I adore the journey Shake takes us on, and the drums in this track are phenomenal! Leading into JT’s verse gives me chills!
