Interview: Your Smith Makes a Comeback with a ‘De-Invention’ on Her Own Terms - Atwood Magazine

Caroline Smith discusses themes of rebirth, reinvention, and authenticity as Your Smith returns following five transformative years out of the limelight. She is entering a new phase with the release of singles “Change of Heart” and “Peaches,” along with an eagerly awaited debut album on the horizon.

“I hope someone can experience these songs as I do, liberated from a social media persona or the pursuit of a fleeting viral moment.”

What initially drew me to Your Smith’s music over six years ago was her genuine embrace of vibrant melodies paired with candid, confessional lyrics. Tracks such as “Bad Habit” and “In Between Plans” resonated deeply, not only because of their incredibly catchy hooks, but also due to their emotional depth and texture; they were songs you could belt out joyfully while feeling something profound within.

      Picking a fight again

      Isn’t it wearin’ thin

      It’s getting hard to tell

      It’s getting hard to call

      Maybe the reason

      We’re falling apart

      Why we’re falling apart

      – “Change of Heart,” Your Smith

The same sentiment applies to “Change of Heart” and “Peaches,” the two singles marking Your Smith’s return to music after an extended break. During this period, she relocated from Los Angeles back to Minnesota, pursued her education, got married, had a child, and opened a bar on her hometown’s main street. The last five years have been a rollercoaster for Caroline Smith, from the lows of the pandemic in 2020 to the anticipated highs of 2025, and her new music channels the vibrant energy from her journey.

Both tracks serve as a reflection of what Smith describes as a reinvention of her career, on her own terms.

“Honestly, it feels more like a de-invention for me, as I decided to peel away any manufactured image that was carefully curated,” she confesses.

“Your Smith was a complete invention. I crafted a persona, chose a signature look, and wrote songs that I deemed cool. I needed armor after a particularly sensitive phase in my life and career, and Your Smith provided that shield and separation from the industry and audience.

“But now I’m much more comfortable and feel prepared to connect my true self with my creative work. I don’t require a uniform or a polished sound anymore. I feel most authentic being a bit casual, slightly messy, with a more natural, loose, and human production style.”

      Hey, you must be tired

      from years of just surviving

      So lay your head back

I’d say as I turned up the radio

and I ripped open a fresh pack

Old tables of produce and tobacco leaves

      Scorched farmland and peaches

      turn to evergreen

The road rolls out endless over all the sand

The wind blows the embers back into my hand

      – “Peaches,” Your Smith

Your Smith, a three-time Atwood Editor’s Pick and one of our 2020 Artists to Watch, has consistently stand out for her effortless fusion of infectious pop melodies, honest lyrics, and undeniable charm. First introduced in 2018 after a decade of music as Caroline Smith and Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps, the Your Smith project released two EPs in its initial two years – 2018’s Bad Habit and 2019’s Wild Wild Woman – both highlighting her talent for bold, genre-defying songwriting and a captivating, larger-than-life presence. Fan favorites like “The Spot,” “In Between Plans,” and “Man of Weakness” expertly balance confidence and vulnerability.

With her recent singles, Smith unveils a more personal and raw side, indicating a significant evolution while still retaining the essence that has always resonated with her fans. The indie pop artist’s first two singles since 2019 offer a tender, deep release—one reflecting on a relationship and the other concerning her family and the past. They also provide a preview of her forthcoming debut album as Your Smith, set to be released later this year.

“I chose to lead with 'Change of Heart' because it feels so unapologetic to me, both in terms of production and lyrical content,” she reflects. “It seemed like a strong way to introduce what the album will encompass.”

Released on January 3rd through Nettwerk Music Group, “Change of Heart” serves as an excellent reintroduction to Your Smith, providing a mix of intimacy and groove with a track that is both captivating and comforting.

“This song focuses on the loss of love rather than the end of a relationship,” Smith explains. “Sometimes relationships can dramatically fall apart, leaving you feeling lost for years while you write about heartbreak and gathering the pieces. However, as we grow older, relationships can become stagnant, and the scariest part is not the heartbreak, but rather liberating yourself from familiar comfort and routine.”
