"It’s always peculiar to have something you've been immersed in for a while become permanently digital. It’s a relief, akin to draining a cyst." — Bill Bickerstaff
As a group of seven members, the creative process can be somewhat intricate. How do you manage your writing sessions? Do a few individuals take charge? Do different members create different tracks? Share some insights into that dynamic.
Bill: Occasionally, one member will present an entire song and take the lead in that instance. However, even then, there’s considerable input and suggestions from the rest of the group. Other times, songs come together from various ideas contributed by different individuals. It requires a lot of respect and active listening from all members, but it allows us to write consistently since if one person is experiencing a slump, others step in to carry the weight. Joe writes all the lyrics, and the songs are typically crafted as instrumentals first.
Last year, you won Green Man’s Rising competition, which meant you kicked off the festival by playing on its main stage! Can you share a bit about this experience? How did it feel to receive that recognition so early, especially before releasing any music?
Bill: Honestly, I can’t recall it very well. Performing for such a large crowd is overwhelming when you’re not accustomed to it. It felt amazing, though we understood there was a long journey ahead of us. We still recognize this.
Neil: I remember it distinctly. It was quite wonderful. Joe and I kept exchanging grins during the performance because it felt so surreal. It was also enjoyable walking around the festival afterwards, being recognized and seeing people donning our t-shirts.
What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever received?
Bill: I don’t take advice very well. Someone once told me, “There are two types of people in life: the quick and the disappointed.” This advice came from a man who is now both quick and disappointed.
Neil: Live laugh love.
Lastly, if DIY is coming over for dinner—what are you preparing?
Bill: A bed that’s the size of an entire room, with walls that are wrapped in cling film.
