Interview: Sean Silverman of Beach Weather Discusses Sound, Band Identity, and Their New Album, 'Melt' - Atwood Magazine

After the launch of Beach Weather’s second album ‘Melt,’ lead guitarist Sean Silverman discusses Arizona, the band’s revised sound, and the dynamics of creating in a post-pandemic era.

It has been an unanticipated couple of years for pop rock band Beach Weather. After a brief hiatus in 2017, they returned in 2022 with a fresh band dynamic shaped by the post-Covid landscape. This interval has rekindled their creative spark, enabling them to explore their separate and interconnected identities amidst a pandemic. Whether working individually or collectively, Beach Weather has embraced presence as their primary approach to music creation. This focus on being present has inspired their newest work, including the upcoming deluxe edition of Melt—an album rich with a revitalized identity rooted in the band’s desert origins.

"I don’t think we expected to have an album out so soon after the last one," shared guitarist Sean Silverman when reflecting on the band’s latest output and the decision to follow up their EP, Pineapple Sunrise, so quickly. "It was just about when we could all be together."

Beach Weather’s sophomore album ‘Melt’ was released in October 2024 via Last Night/Arista Records. Since the band’s inception, Silverman has taken on a multifaceted role, serving as lead guitarist, songwriter, and producer for the trio. We connected via Zoom—both of us in Los Angeles, with him preparing for a festival performance at M3F Fest in Arizona, which followed a short string of shows at the end of 2024 post-release of Melt.

There’s a sense of nostalgia as Beach Weather kicks off the year with a show in Arizona, a state significant to their beginnings and where Melt was conceived, crafted, and presented in the heart of the desert. It feels like a full circle moment—a poignant journey that reflects the very narratives expressed in Melt.

“We always meet in Phoenix. We were 17, 18, 19 when we first met and now, ten years later, we’ve transformed into this band,” Silverman chuckles. He acknowledges that returning to familiar places can also present challenges. “Recording in a city not renowned for music can be tough, but it creates the right kind of tension that drives us to finish our work. Sometimes, having too many resources leads to too many possibilities. There’s something about limitations that encourages resolution.”

Recently, the song “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” joined Spotify’s Billions Club, an accolade recognizing tracks that have surpassed a billion streams—something the band values deeply. With its heavy bass line and Nick Santino's resonant voice, layered with captivating low-tempo drums, it became an infectious hit in 2023, whether discovered on TikTok or otherwise.

Beach Weather’s ‘Melt’d (Deluxe)’ is scheduled for a May 30 release. Their latest album embodies a new sound—rock-oriented, musically psychedelic, and lyrically introspective. One standout track, “Hardcore Romance,” features alternative-indie artist Ari Abdul. It’s an electrifying piece marked by its vibrant drum rhythm and sultry vocals that surpass their previous musical identity. The song builds energy that crescendos until its explosive final chorus—a reflection of their evolution. Now, as they gear up for a tour with Pierce The Veil and the deluxe release on May 30, Melt feels more genuine to the band: visionaries eager to comprehend the human experience.

In discussions about relationships and personal growth, Beach Weather has realized that identity and sound are fundamentally intertwined. "Find out who you are and do it on purpose," a quote by Dolly Parton, encapsulates their journey since their hiatus. Music became their purpose, a driving force that shines in the studio and on stage, as they have transformed their journey of self-discovery into a burning passion.

      A CONVERSATION WITH BEACH WEATHER

Atwood Magazine: You launched your sophomore album, Melt, in October. How has the rollout been for you? What highlights and challenges have you faced during this new musical phase?

Beach Weather: It’s been interesting because we didn’t expect to release an album so soon after the previous one. We also hadn’t anticipated touring as extensively as we did the year before. It came down to finding a time when we could all be together. Creating via FaceTime during quarantine was tough, but we found a unique window to make the record. That excitement led us to push for things more quickly than we usually would. It felt thrilling for our fans, especially as we connected with many new listeners in the past couple of years. For them, it felt immediate. Conversely, some fans who hadn’t seen us live were eager to hear older songs. It’s a challenging balance—satisfying our new audience while transitioning into this new era, which
