Esme Emerson: "The more genuine it is, the more fulfilling it becomes to create songs."

"We don't need to discuss anything. We're both aligned in our vision for the song."

Having grown up in Suffolk with both Chinese and British roots, Esme Emerson always felt out of place. Now, they have discovered a sense of connection with each other and their music, fostering a safe environment not just for themselves but also for their fans. “I like to believe that we’ve developed a deeper sense of belonging as we’ve matured," Esme shares. "Being honest in our music and songs allowed us to be unapologetically ourselves."

That said, the duo is keen to continue expanding their artistic boundaries, and ‘Applesauce’ reflects their desire “not to be confined.” From the glitchy pop-rock of ‘Too Far Gone’ to the playful folk of ‘Yard’ and the serene electronica of ‘Stay’, the four tracks of the EP illustrate significant growth and are likely just the beginning of their journey towards broader creative explorations. “I think we’d like to explore more folky and country-inspired genres, as well as delve into Midwest emo and math rock,” Emerson expresses with enthusiasm, while Esme nods in agreement. “I love the new Oklou album and, of course, [Charli xcx’s] ‘BRAT’ alongside other electronic records; [we really enjoy] hyperpop and the PC Music movement too.”

Having already gained over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, the duo shows no signs of slowing down. “I genuinely want to create an album. As long as I’m proud of the album I make, I think I could die happy,” Emerson jokes, before adding with a hint of shyness, “I also want to perform at Glastonbury.”

For Esme Emerson, crafting music goes beyond the songs themselves; it’s about establishing a space where they and others who feel out of place can truly belong. With their continually evolving sound and steadfast sense of identity, perhaps performing at Glastonbury isn’t as distant a dream as it seems.
