Next Wave #1225: Chloe Slater

The past year has been quite eventful for socially-aware singer-songwriter Chloe Slater. The Manchester-based artist received significant praise for her debut EP, ‘You Can’t Put A Price On Fun.’ This project was preceded by a wave of viral videos circulating on social media: Slater had been sharing content on TikTok since 2023, but everything changed dramatically when snippets of her song ‘24 Hours’ – a pointed critique of influencer culture – gained widespread attention on the platform.

Empowering Gen Z with anthems rooted in anti-capitalism and a shifting identity, Slater reflects on her rise to fame. “If I had told myself two years ago where I would be now, I wouldn’t have believed it,” she shares with CLASH. “My life is incredibly different now, but in a wonderful way. I just feel really fortunate.”

Slater points to modern influences in her creations: Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender, Paramore, and particularly Wolf Alice – whom she calls her “favorite band ever.” Her music also shows influences from the upbeat bands that characterized the New York alt-rock scene of the 2000s. However, what distinctly sets Slater apart from her influences is her lyrical style; often merging spoken-word verses with powerful, impactful choruses, she offers timely insights into contemporary life in Britain.

One track can be traced back to the 2019 general election. “I couldn’t vote, but I was really frustrated, especially when Jeremy Corbyn lost,” she recalls. Years later, during the cost-of-living crisis, Slater wrote what would become her signature song, ‘24 Hours.’

In her latest EP, ‘Love Me Please,’ she aims straight for the heart from the start. “It’s the first EP I created with my producer Shute in his bedroom. We didn’t have a large studio to record live drums and guitars,” she explains. “Now that I’ve delved into heavier music and can play with amplified guitars, I think I want to fully embrace that.” The songs take on a more melancholic and darker tone: ‘Tiny Screens’ addresses social media's divisive aspects, while ‘Imposter’ offers one of the most introspective and emotional moments of Slater’s career to date.

Having accomplished so much in 2024, Chloe Slater has a lot to anticipate this year. “I have my first proper headline tour. It’s going to be pretty intense, as we have seven dates and just one day off. I haven’t really done anything like this before. I’m also touring with Alessi Rose in April. I can’t wait!”
