Tunde Adebimpe is primarily recognized as the lead singer of the influential New York indie band TV on The Radio from the 2000s. He has also established a successful acting career, appearing in the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew and the blockbuster Twisters in 2024. Now, he releases his debut album ‘Thee Black Boltz’, an eclectic collection that reveals a different facet of his artistry.
‘Magnetic’ captures the lively essence of the best TV on The Radio tracks, infused with an electronic vibe. Its irresistible energy and brief duration of just two minutes and thirty seconds leave a lasting impression, especially with a noteworthy middle section centered on his vocals and rhythmic beats. This track serves as a powerful opener for the album, signaling to fans that this project is thrilling in its own right.
‘Ate The Moon’ offers a similar feel, with Adebimpe's vocals shining through, demonstrating that he remains as strong as ever after 25 years. The track conveys a compelling narrative, deeper than his work with TV on The Radio yet remains captivating.
‘Pinstack’ leans more into indie territory with its distorted guitars and drums. Like TV on The Radio, it showcases a variety of influences and an experimental flair. It features moments where most instruments drop out, highlighting the power of his vocals. ‘Drop’ introduces a funk and hip hop influence, diverging from some of the other tracks but maintaining an overall cohesiveness.
‘ILY’ highlights his vocal range, presenting a softer, more acoustic sound. Almost a folk-rock piece, it stands out as one of the most soothing tracks on the album, revealing a work filled with emotion and depth that feels personal.
‘Thee Black Boltz’ serves as an intriguing side project for Tunde Adebimpe, showcasing familiar elements from TV on The Radio while expanding into new territory. It emphasizes his artistic vision and musical intelligence, incorporating indie, electronic, and folk influences. Despite the complexity of its content, he successfully creates a cohesive flow. With TV on The Radio planning a tour later this year, this album may serve as a temporary venture, but it offers plenty to appreciate as his first solo effort.
