After being best friends for nearly ten years, it’s no surprise that Louise Macphail and Kristin McFadden, known as Prima Queen, have created a debut album filled with palpable tenderness and intimacy. The opening sonic textures of ‘Clickbait’ introduce a dreamlike essence that permeates ‘The Prize’, invoking feelings of both nostalgia and emotion, which further blossoms in the warm reflections of ‘Mexico’ and the glimmering chorus of the title track. Consistent with their previous work, the duo’s keen attention to lyrical detail shines through, giving the album a nearly diary-like quality (for example, the poignant opening line of ‘Ugly’: “Saturday of Glastonbury, I watched you play William’s Green” or the blissed-out ‘Flying Ant Day’ showcasing some of their most direct expressions). Their honest and relatable confessions frequently resonate deeply (“How could I tell you that I love you / When I know you won’t say it back?” from ‘Spaceship’). While there are moments where the charm can tilt towards the overly sweet—‘Sunshine Song’ and its repetitive hook feels a bit too saccharine, even with the added distortion towards the end—overall, ‘The Prize’ is a heartfelt exploration of life’s intimate connections, with female friendship at the heart of this duo’s world.
