British folk legend Wizz Jones has passed away.

Wizz Jones, the esteemed British folk musician, has passed away.

The news was announced on April 27th through a statement on the songwriter's social media accounts, written by his son, Simeon Jones. Wizz Jones had been in declining health for some time and died in a hospice just two days after celebrating his 86th birthday.

Hailing from Surrey, Wizz Jones developed a passion for the guitar influenced by the skiffle movement. Inspired by American musicians, he grew his hair long after seeing images of Woody Guthrie and figures from the Beat Generation. His mother affectionately dubbed him with the enduring nickname, inspired by a character from Beano named Wizzy the Wuz.

An innovative acoustic guitarist, Wizz Jones became a vital part of the London folk scene, impacting those around him. He released his first solo album in 1969 and maintained a dual focus on his individual career while pursuing collaborative efforts.

Over the decades, he engaged in writing, recording, and touring, with the 21st century allowing this often-overlooked artist to gain a bit more recognition. Wizz Jones continued to tour until the end, with his final performance taking place at London’s Ivy House earlier this year.

In a message from his family, son Simeon Jones shared:

With great sorrow, I share that my beloved father, the legendary Wizz Jones, passed away early this morning, just two days after his 86th birthday.

His absence has created a significant void in our family and has robbed the music world of a true gem.

This year, his health deteriorated rapidly, and we are grateful to Trinity Hospice for ensuring his last days were as comfortable as possible.

Always modest, these were his final words at the conclusion of his last performance on February 28th, 2025:

“Thanks to everyone – indeed, all over the world – who listened to my songs and appreciated my guitar playing, and who attended my shows throughout the years. Thank you very much.”

Included is a song from that performance, written by his lifelong friend Alan Tunbridge.

Wizz was apprehensive about disappointing audiences with his weakened singing voice, but was even more concerned about letting them down by not being present…

Warning – it may evoke tears.

I hope his beautiful music endures and continues to enrich the world.

Thank you for the love you have shown him throughout the years.
