This year, the Mercury Prize will be held in Newcastle.

The event highlights the finest in British and Irish album releases and has become one of the significant happenings in the music calendar. Last year's recipients were English Teacher, whose impressive debut albums triumphed in a highly competitive field.

For the first time in its history, the Mercury Prize will move from London for its 2025 edition and will take place in Newcastle.

The North East will host this glamorous event, with the Mercury team collaborating closely with Newcastle City Council and The North East Combined Authority.

The list of the twelve 'Albums of the Year' will be revealed on Wednesday, September 10th. The 2025 Award Show is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th, at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle.

Dr. Jo Twist OBE, Chief Executive of BPI, stated: "We are thrilled to announce this historic moment for the Mercury Prize. Our community of labels and we are dedicated to celebrating and showcasing talent from across the UK. Previous winners and Album of the Year artists of the Mercury Prize have continually showcased this unique pool of homegrown talent. Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a genuine music city, and we are eager to collaborate with our partners at The City of Newcastle & North East Combined Authority to make this inaugural event a memorable Mercury Prize 2025.”

Mayor Kim McGuinness commented: “Hosting the Mercury Prize in the North East is yet another remarkable achievement that enhances our rich cultural legacy and bolsters our reputation as a cultural region.”

“The achievements of artists like Sam Fender demonstrate the potential for young musicians in our area, and bringing the Mercury Prize to the North East allows us to highlight our local talent. Our region's cultural landscape is robust and deeply rooted in the pride and creativity of our communities, places, and industrial history. This event is a testament to that and will elevate our region on both national and international platforms.”
