The Mercury Prize 2025 reveals an unexpected decision to be held in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The Mercury Prize has revealed that this year’s ceremony will take place in Newcastle! The unexpected announcement was made today, along with the confirmed date of the ceremony, set for 16th October 2025. This marks the first time the event will be held outside of the capital city. This year, the awards will occur at Utilita Arena, Newcastle, in collaboration with Newcastle City Council and The North East Combined Authority. The awards body stated that the shortlists for the 2025 ‘Album of the Year’ will be unveiled on 10th September, with BBC broadcasting the ceremony as usual. The Mercury Prize honors the best new music from Britain and Ireland, awarding a prize for an album each year. Previous winners include notable names such as English Teacher, Ezra Collective, Little Simz, Wolf Alice, Arctic Monkeys, and more. As is customary, this year’s ceremony will showcase live performances from some of the twelve shortlisted artists, culminating in the announcement of the 2025 winner at the end of the evening. Additionally, Newcastle will host a week-long fringe of events organized by Generator (the North’s leading music development agency), aimed at creating new opportunities for local artists, venues, and communities. “Newcastle being selected as the first location for the prestigious Mercury Prize to be held outside of London speaks volumes about the growing strength of the music industry in the city and the surrounding region,” said Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, in response to the announcement. “I may be biased, but this is the best city in the world, and it’s no surprise to me that there is global interest in Newcastle.” She added, “While other cities are known for their musical icons from the past, Newcastle is focused on the future, and our rising reputation for emerging talents and industry investment reflects that.” Tickets for the 2025 Mercury Prize are available to the public here.
