Album Review
4 Stars: It maintains its relentless intensity.

From the outset of this second full-length release by the Dublin-Belfast-London punk band, it becomes evident that the album stands in stark contrast to its title. Comprising 11 tracks of exhilarating post-punk noise, the trio retains the visceral energy of their debut ‘Attachment Styles’ while unleashing a more urgent, pulse-pounding, crushing soundscape. The opening track ‘Pursuit’ generates an anxiety-laden buildup; the line “I thought the shoes I’m wearing would help me run away from you” resembles a fiery Catherine Wheel, continually escalating before erupting into an impassioned scream. It delivers an intense sonic experience. ‘DM:AM’ resembles a disturbed hornet’s nest, while ‘E8 - N16’ strikes a balance between Star Wars and early black midi. The closing track ‘In Coda’ ventures into a darker goth territory. From the glitchy, distortion-heavy ‘I Miss My Dog’ to the entrancing noise of ‘You Are Temporary, The Internet Is Forever,’ ‘Something Soft’ remains relentless in its ferocity, establishing M(h)aol as a formidable presence.
