On ‘Felt Better Alive’, Peter Doherty lets out a breath of relief. This album reflects someone who has battled numerous demons in the public eye, emerged on the other side, and is starting to find a sense of tranquility. It reinforces Doherty's position as one of the most versatile, poetic, and naturally talented songwriters of his generation. Hailing from the tranquil countryside of Normandy, the songs possess a country bounce, featuring predominantly acoustic guitars and plenty of fiddle solos. Quirky characters enhance the lyrics, from the alchemical cider maker in the opener ‘Calvados’ to the band of barfly misfits in ‘Poca Mahoney’s’, giving Doherty the presence of an old storyteller sharing tales passed down over the years. However, the emphasis isn’t solely on fiction; ‘Pot of Gold’ serves as a heartfelt tribute to his daughter, and the title track reads like a battle-scarred declaration for his new beginning. ‘Ed Belly’ perfectly merges these styles, depicting a titular character whose journey with a collection of songs through “clouds of skag” feels very familiar to Doherty himself. ‘Felt Better Alive’ isn’t aiming for high art or attempting to craft another masterpiece, as seen in the nursery rhyme rhythm of ‘Out of Tune Balloon’ and ‘Fingee’, a track that can best be characterized as Chas n Dave meets Lankum and lasts barely two minutes. Yet, this album captures the sound of one of rock's most resilient survivors exhaling and enjoying himself, which is ultimately what matters most. “Troubled souls have a song worth singing,” expresses the closing sentiment on ‘Ed Belly’, highlighting why so many continue to feel a strong connection to Peter Doherty’s music.
