Themes of resilience and loss are intricately woven throughout ‘Metalhorse’, the third album by Billy Nomates, the musical project of Bristol-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Victoria ‘Tor’ Maries.
With ‘Metalhorse’, Tor and her band boldly advance. This marks her first studio album recorded with a full band, showcasing her at her most sonically daring. Touted as a concept album, ‘Metalhorse’ follows 2023’s critically acclaimed ‘CACTI’ and is inspired by the imagery of a rundown funfair.
Tor Maries likens the idea of the funfair to a space where “some rides are enjoyable, while others simply aren’t,” serving as a fitting metaphor for life’s unpredictability and emotional contrasts.
Throughout the album, the fairground imagery is not overtly presented in the lyrics but is embedded in the music’s mood and texture, creating an almost cinematic journey conveyed through sound. This is exemplified in the stripped-down synth-punk track ‘Nothing Worth Winnin’, where the sounds of slot machines ringing out underscore a reflection on the surreal highs and harsh lows of the music industry.
Grief and loss are central themes of ‘Metalhorse’, as Tor sadly lost her father to Parkinson’s disease last year. Her father Peter was a significant musical inspiration and an emotional foundation in her life.
A fortunate moment led to Hugh Cornwell, the frontman of The Stranglers, collaborating with Tor and the Billy NoMates band on ‘Dark Horse Friend’. A devoted fan of The Stranglers, her father passed on to her a profound appreciation for the iconic band. Therefore, to not only share the recording studio but also collaborate on the track was undoubtedly a surreal and special moment for the singer-songwriter, and it stands out as one of the highlights of the album.
‘Metalhorse’ incorporates impressive new genres and sonic textures, blending elements of blues, folk, synth-pop, electro, and even a hint of country, while still retaining the distinct defiant punk energy characteristic of Billy NoMates.
The opening titular track ‘Metalhorse’ exudes theatricality, and the energizing momentum of ‘The Test’ propels the band full throttle, similar to the bold ‘Override’, a triumphant anthem of resilience that encourages listeners to ‘do yourself a favour and get out’ when facing life’s challenges.
‘Metalhorse’ serves as a guide for the human experience. Tor gracefully addresses themes of loss and material insecurity alongside the struggle to stay true to oneself in these unpredictable times. Yet, despite these issues, the album does not dwell in darkness; it is an uplifting testament to hope, reflection, and resilience—a stark reminder of the need to seek out moments of joy amid a world filled with chaos and uncertainty. ‘Metalhorse’ urges listeners to find their own funfair and moments of happiness while navigating the roller coaster of life.
The poignant ‘Strange Gift’ radiates vulnerability, encouraging listeners to embrace the currents of change and allow themselves to be carried forward. It is a radiant highlight, complemented by the invigorating energy of ‘Plans’, an anthem celebrating self-love, and the dreamy ‘Comedic Timing’, where she poignantly admits, “the world has moved on and I’ve lost my comedic timing,” showcasing her sharp insights.
Confessional yet cathartic, ‘Metalhorse’ is an emotionally resonant work that is vital and vivid, demonstrating why Billy NoMates is a definitive ‘Tor’ de force.
