Music icon Bruce Springsteen kicked off his new series of UK performances last night and took the opportunity to voice his opposition to Donald Trump.
Known for his liberal views, the songwriter actively campaigned for Barack Obama during his successful presidential run.
Not a supporter of Donald Trump or his policies, Springsteen has consistently criticized the U.S. President throughout both of Trump's terms.
Last night (May 13th), Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band began their Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester, where Bruce expressed three statements regarding the current state of affairs in the United States.
The artist made these comments before performing his songs “Land of Hope and Dreams,” “House of a Thousand Guitars,” and “My City of Ruins.”
We won't paraphrase, so here are the exact transcripts of all three spoken segments:
Introduction to Land of Hope and Dreams:
Good Evening! It’s wonderful to be in Manchester and back in the UK. Welcome to the Land of Hope and Dreams Tour! The powerful E Street Band is here tonight to summon the righteous strength of art, music, and rock 'n roll in these perilous times. In my home, the America I cherish, the America I’ve written about—a beacon of hope and freedom for 250 years—is now under the control of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous government.
Tonight, we call upon everyone who believes in democracy and the best of our American experience to stand with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism, and let freedom resonate!

Introduction to House of a Thousand Guitars:
The final safeguard against power, once the governmental checks and balances have faltered, are the people—both you and me. It is the unity of individuals around shared values that currently stands as the only barrier between democracy and authoritarianism. Ultimately, all we have is one another.
Introduction to City of Ruin:
There are some very bizarre, strange, and perilous events happening out there right now. In America, individuals are being persecuted for exercising their right to free speech and expressing dissent. This is occurring at this moment.
In America, the wealthiest are taking pleasure in neglecting the world's most vulnerable children, leaving them to illness and death. This is happening now. In my country, there are those who derive cruel joy from the suffering they cause loyal American workers. They are rolling back pivotal civil rights laws that have fostered a more just and diverse society. They are forsaking our valued allies and aligning with dictators against those fighting for their freedom. They are cutting funding to American universities that refuse to submit to their ideological pressures. They are removing citizens from the streets and deporting them without due process to foreign detention facilities and prisons. This is all happening now.
A significant number of our elected officials have neglected to shield the American public from the misuses of an unfit president and a rogue government. They lack regard for what it truly means to be profoundly American. The America I have sung about for 50 years is real, and despite its flaws, it is a remarkable country filled with great people. We will endure this moment. Now, I hold hope, because I trust in the truth of what the esteemed American writer James Baldwin stated: "in this world there isn’t as much humanity as one would like, but there’s enough." Let’s pray.
