Foo Fighters have officially ended their collaboration with drummer Josh Freese.
Freese announced the news on social media overnight, indicating he was “shocked and disappointed” by the decision.
He joined Foo Fighters two years ago after the passing of their long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022. Freese brought significant experience to the role, having played with bands like Devo, Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Paramore, and others.
In his message, Josh Freese revealed that he was informed of the decision last week, stating:
The Foo Fighters contacted me Monday night to inform me they’ve decided to ‘go in a different direction with their drummer’. No reason was provided : (. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the last two years with them, both on and off the stage, and I respect their choice for what they believe is best for the band.
He also shared that he was “shocked” by this outcome:
In my 40 years of playing professionally, I’ve never been dismissed from a band, so while I’m not angry, I am shocked and disappointed. However, as many of you know, I’ve always worked as a freelancer and switched between groups, so I’ll be okay. Stay tuned for my “top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters” list.
Several musicians showed their support for Josh Freese on social media, with Stewart Copeland commenting: “This is fortunate for the five other bands you play with.” Chad Wackerman remarked: “Josh, I really appreciated what you brought to the band! This is just crazy. What new direction are they planning? Polka?”
Foo Fighters have not released an official statement regarding this change.
