Drummer Zak Starkey has officially departed from The Who.

It has been a rough week for drummers in legendary rock bands – just hours after Foo Fighters let go of Josh Freese (leaving him “shocked and disappointed”), it appears that The Who have also parted ways with Zak Starkey.

Zak Starkey has been a vital member of The Who for more than 20 years, but recent performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall seemed to highlight ongoing concerns. Starkey publicly stated he was dismissed for “over playing” – while the band later released a statement claiming the issue had been resolved.

Earlier today, Pete Townshend of The Who posted another statement confirming that Zak Starkey had in fact left the band. In an official message on The Who’s social media, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey wrote:

The Who are approaching retirement, while Zak is 20 years younger and has a bright future ahead with his new band and other exciting projects. He needs to channel all his energy into making them successful. We wish him all the luck in the world. Scott Devours – who fans will recognize from Roger’s solo performances – will be stepping in for Zak. We hope that all our fans will welcome him.

In response, Zak Starkey released a statement claiming he was instructed to tell the public that he had quit The Who – which he refused to do.

I was let go two weeks after being reinstated and was asked to release a statement saying I had resigned from The Who to focus on my other musical pursuits. This would be dishonest. I love The Who and would never have quit. Therefore, I didn’t make that statement… quitting The Who would also let down the countless incredible people who supported me (thank you all immensely) through the chaotic weeks of me being in and out repeatedly.

The Who will embark on a North American farewell tour later this year, with Scott Devours on drums. Could Zak Starkey’s next move involve rejoining a reunited Oasis? The Manchester legends have yet to reveal the lineup for this summer’s major reunion shows, but speculation is rampant that with availability in his schedule, Zak could make a return.
