Glass Tiger’s “Canada’s Song” Is an Affirmation of Genuine Patriotism - Atwood Magazine

“Canada’s Song,” the latest release from Alan Frew and Glass Tiger, is a tribute to a nation with unwavering values and an unyielding spirit.

Alan Frew is well-versed in crafting love songs, yet his newest offering serves as a sincere anthem to his “home and native land.” In “Canada’s Song,” Frew steps away from the realm of romantic ballads to present a heartfelt homage to the country that welcomed him as a young immigrant and has influenced his journey as a musician and individual. With themes of gratitude and gentle patriotism, the song conveys admiration that transcends mere flag-waving, as it is deeply rooted in values, belonging, and quiet pride.

The track subtly yet powerfully acknowledges Canada’s progressive stance on human rights:

Where you are free to dream

Free to be who you are

Free to trust in your star

Free to reach for the stars.

“It’s a celebration,” Frew explains. “When respected and cherished, Canada acts as a friend, ally, and a beacon of hope for the millions she currently embraces, as well as the millions yet to come.”

Frew migrated from Coatbridge, Scotland to Ontario, Canada as a teenager. Though his warm Scottish accent has softened through years spent in Canada, his identity is undeniably Canadian. “Canada is neither a coin for a slot machine nor a card to gamble with,” he asserts. “It’s not something to be politicized, traded, or sold. I hope you will appreciate and embrace this simple song, which doesn’t take sides in the elitist political sphere. It is a celebration of Canada’s beauty and a call to action, urging you to cherish and safeguard the freedoms we enjoy today.”

      From the isle of Vancouver

      To the Labrador Sea

One nation that stands strong and free

Where I’m free to be me

From the melodies of the prairies

To the echoes of the ponds

      Heroes of times past

      But their memories linger

      On and on and on

      Oh, this is Canada’s Song

      Oh, where my heart belongs.

Canada has indeed treated Frew well. Before swapping his scrubs as a registered nurse for a microphone and a tour bus, he took a brave step to chase a music career, leading him to become the iconic frontman of Glass Tiger in Canadian rock history. Partnering with original members Sam Reid (keyboards) and Al Connelly (guitar), he helped propel the band to fame with their 1985 hit “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone),” featuring guest vocals from fellow Canadian Bryan Adams. The song quickly became a classic, gaining international recognition and establishing Glass Tiger as one of Canada’s most successful bands.

      Where you’re free to dream

Free to be who you are

Free to believe in your star

      Free to go far

      Oh, this is Canada’s Song

      Oh, where my heart belongs

Oh, where we’re free to be

      Oh, we’re strong and free

      Free to be

      Oh, free to dream

Free to be who you are.

Over the years, Frew has amassed hits and accolades like treasures. He and the band were recently inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, a testament to their lasting impact on the cultural scene. Their journey has taken them globally, opening for Tina Turner on her 1987 “Break Every Rule” European tour and collaborating with Rod Stewart, Julian Lennon, Mickey Dolenz, and the Chieftains—all while proudly representing Canada’s message of friendship and freedom abroad.

“I’ve performed in nearly every corner of the U.S.,” he shares. “I’ve broken bread in war zones, sharing connections with the courageous members of our armed forces who fight to protect the freedoms we often take for granted.”

“Canada’s Song” may be simple in its structure, yet it delivers a profoundly resonant message. This isn’t the first instance of Frew and Glass Tiger marrying music with meaning. The title track of their second album “Diamond Sun” pays homage to the spiritual heritage of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, recognizing their history, resilience, and sacred bond with the land.

But this one feels distinct. More personal. “It’s not about sides or slogans,” Frew emphasizes. “It’s about unity. It’s about remembering the beauty and fragility of this country and our individual responsibilities in preserving it.”

      Oh, this is Canada’s song

      Oh, where my heart belongs

      Oh, we’re free to be

      Oh, we’re strong and free

      Oh, this is Canada’s song

Oh, where I’m free to be

      Strong and free.
