On the opening track ‘Tequila Coma’, yeule channels the pop-rock Celtic influence of The Corrs’ Y2K hit ‘Breathless’, singing: “Tequila coma / Naked on the marble floor / And all my lovers / Crucified on the floor.” Sonically, it marks a significant departure from the glitchy dream-pop of 2023's ‘softscars’, with tracks like ‘Eko’ and ‘Dudu’ exhibiting a similarly vibrant energy, evoking the abstract pop aesthetics reminiscent of Caroline Polachek. Thematically, ‘Evangelic Girl Is A Gun’ shifts focus from haunting digital dystopias to themes of embodied self-destruction, literary romanticism, and the ego death inherent in artistry. Here, the digital aspect of fame becomes both sinewy and tangible, straddling two realms: “Did you see the video where I live streamed from my car?” they ask in the eerie ‘The Girl Who Sold Her Face’, “I drank blood and chewed on bones and I was finally a star.” Consequently, the melodies feel more dynamic, sticky, and grounded, influenced by decades of angsty, percussive grunge and melancholic post-pop shoegaze that ground yeule from their barren sci-fi origins into a more palpable reality. This evolution is a refreshing change that broadens their established sound; the standout track ‘VV’ showcases yeule at their most optimistic, lovesick, and polished. Overall, ‘Evangelic Girl is a Gun’ is a display of pop innovation.
