It's set to release on September 5th...
Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond has announced her upcoming album titled ‘Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark’.
An innovative solo artist, Gwenifer Raymond explores the traditional guitar heritage created by John Fahey while carving out her own unique and layered instrumental style. Her two impressive studio albums released under Tompkins Square have solidified her standing in the music scene, with a new album expected later this year.
Scheduled for release on September 5th through We Are Busy Bodies, ‘Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark’ was created in her home studio, inspired by the need to unwind after an intense touring period and her ongoing fascination with science fiction and the mystical.
“A lot of the readings I was engaging with involved themes around the concept of infinity and ideas related to the afterlife,” she shares. “These thoughts were prevalent in my mind, especially while I was crafting some of the droning sounds that frame the album. It begins from the cosmic void and concludes through the galactic plane. Perhaps you're exiting hyperdrive into a mysterious planet where the album resides before you shoot off to explore whatever comes next.”
The album is available for pre-order and is led by the track ‘Jack Parsons Blues’—intricate and captivating, the subtle flamenco influence complements Gwenifer’s powerful intensity.
The song pays tribute to a 1940s Californian rocket scientist who was a founding member of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and interestingly, a friend of L. Ron Hubbard and a follower of Aleister Crowley.
“I’ve been fascinated with Jack Parsons for a long time,” Raymond reflects, remembering her teenage years spent reading articles about him in Fortean Times. “He resided in a large, old mansion filled with a variety of eccentric characters and con artists. His life ended suddenly when he had an explosion in his home laboratory. Despite his flaws, I see him as a somewhat romantic figure—full of limitless enthusiasm and ideas. He was both a scientist and someone who embraced the bizarre and the mystical. He’s strangely inspirational.”
Tune in now.
