Listen: “Point of View” – AGE of the BEAR

AGE of the BEAR’s “Point of View” immerses you in a profoundly personal and emotionally charged space, one that many experience at various points in life. With its introspective lyrics and a quiet yearning for connection, the song encapsulates the uncertainty of one’s place in the world while holding onto the hope of having an impact.

From the very first line: “I came here for directions, but only got more questions,” Anthony Cubbage, the artist behind AGE of the BEAR, connects with a universally relatable sentiment – the quest for answers that instead leads to further doubt. He doesn’t claim to have life all figured out. Rather, he candidly reveals a confusion and vulnerability that feels familiar to us all.

Point of View – AGE of the BEAR

      I came here for directions

      But only got more questions

      Don’t have a destination

Or any future in my mind

      If you could see

      My point of view

      I’d ask if I

      Could see yours too

One of the most compelling moments occurs with the lines: “Don’t need to be an idol / Don’t want my songs to be a bible / Just want to know that I could / Be the reason someone made it out of bed.” This is a simple yet profound wish – to be the motivation for someone to get through their day. Cubbage, a self-produced indie folk singer/songwriter from Troy, New York, isn’t chasing fame; he aims for his music to resonate with someone, to make them feel less isolated.

The song’s allure lies in its contrast: a minimalist melody, juxtaposed with deep emotional themes. This equilibrium enhances its impact, particularly for anyone who has grappled with self-doubt or questioned their value.

At its essence, this track transcends a single individual’s quest for meaning – it resonates with all of us. In a world that often seems to expect constant success or perfection, “Point of View” gently reminds us that it’s okay not to have all the answers; that honesty, connection, and supporting one another – even through music – can be sufficient.

Don’t need to be an idol

Don’t want my songs to be a bible

Just want to know that I could

Be the reason someone made it out of bed

      'Cause if you could see

      My point of view

      I’d ask if I

      Could see yours too

AGE of the BEAR’s music carries a deep significance – an intimacy that stays with you long after the last note. It’s not only about the sound, but also the emotions it conveys: raw, reflective, and deeply human. This emotional authenticity is central to his forthcoming second album, Oceans: Ode to the Isolated Artist, slated for release this summer.

To celebrate and document the creative process behind Oceans, Cubbage initiated a Kickstarter campaign to produce the album on vinyl. For him, this venture goes beyond format – it’s about memory. Vinyl serves as a tangible, enduring tribute to the journey, allowing fans to physically hold a part of it.

“Imagine completing your college degree, only to receive an email with a PDF saying, ‘Congrats, here’s your degree (see attachment below).’ There’s something cathartic about solidifying our experiences into a physical form,” he remarks.

“While this vinyl could symbolize a pivotal moment in my journey as an artist, I hope it also becomes something you can cherish and say, ‘I remember this chapter of my life,’ as many albums do for me. Even if you mostly listen in the car on your phone, having that visual and physical reminder that this period truly existed, not just on a digital device.”

If Cian Ducrot’s debut album ‘Victory’ represented an open wound – raw, emotional, and profoundly confessional – then his new single “Shalalala” symbolizes the healing scar that responds with resilience and joy. Renowned for his heartfelt ballads of heartbreak and yearning, the Irish singer/songwriter takes a new creative direction with this latest track, presenting a triumphant, gospel-influenced anthem that is both surprising and exhilarating.

I typically have no inclination to join the 'in-crowd,' but I was willing to make an exception to witness The Dare perform at a venue he knows very well. As night #4 of his seven-show residency at Baby's All Right began, I navigated through a crowd of 280 to enjoy the evening from various angles... to see how this music and culture impacts people while also allowing myself to partake in the enjoyment. The Dare's debut album, 'What's Wrong With New York?,' is now available.
