Hushtones Compose a Thank You Letter to Brian Wilson

The composer of the Beach Boys passed away earlier this month...

Goodbye, Brian Wilson. Music took a moment to pause and reflect on the Beach Boys' composer this month, as his passing serves as a poignant reminder of the profound influence his life and creations have had. Despite encountering significant challenges, the splendor of his musical legacy will echo through generations.

The Liverpool band Hushtones are longtime admirers and frequently cite albums like ‘Pet Sounds’ as integral to their identity.

Their upcoming album, ‘Wildflower In The Mystery’, is set to release on September 19th and was produced by Steve Levine – fatefully, a collaborator with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys in 1985.

With their new single ‘Come To The Garden’ released now – described by the band as “a 60s inspired, summery, mellotron-infused moment of sweetness” – Hushtones have written a letter of gratitude to the brilliance of Brian Wilson.

      A Tribute to Brian Wilson

      Dear Brian,

Without you and The Beach Boys, Hushtones would either be an entirely different band or might not exist at all.

In May 2016, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It was uncertain if I’d even secure a ticket, as they sold out quickly. It wasn’t until the day of the performance that a friend sold me their ticket. I could barely contain my excitement; I was actually going to see Brian Wilson.

The performance felt like a dream. With you and Al Jardine at the helm of the band, and the hall uniquely designed for orchestral performances, the music gained an entirely new dimension. I didn't even sing along to my favorite songs because I was so focused on the musicianship of the band.

During your rendition of ‘Don’t Worry Baby’, everything clicked for me. I remember thinking, “If I could create something even half as moving as this, my career would be a success.” That moment has resonated with me ever since. In October of that same year, after witnessing you live, I met Martha. Together, we formed an early version of Hushtones, emphasizing vocal harmony, eventually joined by two wonderful singers, Caitlin and Joe.

Every piece we create features all four voices in every song, which connects us back to our influences. With The Beach Boys' exceptional talent for perfectly blending five voices, we aim to replicate that dynamic with our four.

We have since collaborated with producer Steve Levine on our forthcoming album – the same Steve Levine who produced The Beach Boys' self-titled album in 1985. This connection is something we are all still amazed by and signifies a true full-circle moment for us as a band.

We felt compelled to write this letter to express our gratitude for everything you’ve accomplished, not just in music but also for Hushtones.

      With all our love,

Mick, Martha, Caitlin, Joe & Abe
