The essence of the song lies in revealing everything and releasing the compulsion to try so hard.

There exists a delicate balance between clarity and collapse, which Will Orchard navigates with remarkable elegance. His newest single is a slowly building explosion, wrapped in the finest folk-rock attire: a poetic deconstruction that is both restless and determined. “Feeling like a bag of nails, feeling like a windless sail,” he opens with, unveiling layers of emotional burden and spiritual exhaustion. The onslaught continues as he laments in the chorus, “Well something’s gotta go or something’s gotta come. Will I know what it is before the air leaves my lungs?” This poignant inquiry resonates beyond personal turmoil, reflecting a universal anxiety about the unknown future.

Breathtakingly personal, achingly raw, and filled with emotion, “Something’s Gotta Go” is a stirring, cathartic upheaval of self: A visceral anthem of unrest, transition, and a fervent desire for change.

Behind the Shadow Glass – Will Orchard

Feeling like a bag of nails

      Feeling like a windless sail

Feeling like a party that’s ended

      Feeling like a three-leaf clover

      Feeling like a chipped tooth

      Feeling like a phone booth

And here we are in twenty twenty-three

Am I living in a dream?

      That just won’t cease

      I’m waking up and

      Falling back in

Atwood Magazine is excited to premiere “Something’s Gotta Go,” the third single from Will Orchard’s upcoming fourth studio album, Behind the Shadow Glass (scheduled for release on September 5, 2025). Following “Nothing Fog” and “Late Bloomer,” this latest piece sees the Nashville-based indie folk artist embracing both his sharpest edges and tenderest truths.

A seasoned independent troubadour and folk singer/songwriter (previously lauded by Atwood Magazine for his “fresh folk tapestries” and “sweet DIY charm”), Will Orchard is renowned for his lyrical introspection, captivating melodies, and sincere, openhearted nature. Behind the Shadow Glass stands as his most ambitious and expansive project yet—a home-recorded album bursting with vibrancy, catharsis, and a reality that strikes hard regardless of whether it rhymes.

      Well something’s gotta go

      Or something’s gotta come

Will I know what it is

Before the air leaves my lungs

As relentless as it is radiant, “Something’s Gotta Go” perfectly encapsulates Orchard’s new chapter of unrefined, unapologetic self-expression.

The song features a dramatic arrangement of keys and distorted guitars, creating a powerful soundscape as he reflects honestly on himself, illuminated by the stark light of reality, fraught with tension and escalating pressure. His lyrics penetrate deeply as his music glistens and ascends. The outcome is a poignant glimpse into a person’s soul amid turmoil and struggle—sometimes tempered, other times tempestuous.

“‘Something’s Gotta Go’ is a cathartic release and an acknowledgment of self-imposed suffering,” Orchard shares with Atwood Magazine. “It explores the cycle of dissatisfaction with oneself and defining oneself based on outside influences. The lyrics are among the more free-spirited and playful I’ve created. Declaring the song ‘finished’ was somewhat challenging due to its rawness and unrefined nature, but that encapsulates the song's spirit—laying everything bare and relinquishing the need to strive so hard.”

      For the last six years

I have been checking my phone

      Waiting for good news

      And driving around alone

      Trying to build a mountain

      Out of grains of sand

And all I ended up with

      Was a sandcastle

      Ready to be toppled down

      So the hermit crabs

Can make their home in the ruins

      Well something’s gotta go

      Or something’s gotta come

Will I know what it is

      Before it’s all over?

There’s a beautifully unrefined quality to this song—like Orchard penned it in the dark with the door ajar.

The verses overflow with feelings of aimlessness, frustration, and delicacy: “For the last six years I have been checking my phone, waiting for good news and driving around alone,” he sings, later revealing, “All I got was a sandcastle.” The song dives deeper with each verse, encapsulating a mind trapped in an endless loop—seeking purpose yet unable to find stability, grappling with a
