A remarkable return to the 90s, longing for concert venues...

After nearly five years off – dubbed a ‘HAIM-atus’ by dedicated fans – the beloved sister trio is back with their latest album ‘I Quit’, solidifying their reputation as formidable rockstars.
Right from the start, the album’s opening track ‘Gone’ showcases a wide array of genres and influences that permeate the fifteen tracks. It begins with an Americana-styled acoustic guitar, placing the focus on the sisters' harmonious vocals, led by Danielle. Each sister takes a verse, creating an engaging experience that builds like the rising peaks of mountain valleys with each chorus. A choir enhances the HAIM sisters’ harmonies during the choruses, accompanied by vibrant guitar riffs and a delightful sample from George Michael’s ‘Freedom’.
As the instrumental elements evolve and intensify, they culminate in a distinctive guitar solo from Danielle that maintains the upbeat 90s pop essence while transitioning into a psychedelic and slightly distorted rhythm, reminiscent of The Stone Roses’ ‘Fool’s Gold’. In just under five minutes, ‘Gone’ encapsulates the full breadth of musical and stylistic influences that ‘I Quit’ embraces.

‘All Over Me’ maintains some of HAIM’s indie-Americana roots while infusing a grungier, more vibrant energy akin to Alanis Morissette, much like the previously released single ‘Everybody’s Trying To Figure Me Out’. ‘The Farm’ delves deeper into country-inspired instrumentals in a ballad form, addressing the personal challenges following a breakup, a central lyrical theme of the album. This track is another testament to sisterly support in tough times, with Danielle singing, “and my sister said it’s alright / you can stay with me if you need a place to calm down / till you get back on your feet.”
‘Lucky Stars’ evokes the sound of a 90s Slowdive shoegaze track, complementing its lyrical theme by reflecting on the positives of a concluded relationship. Its sound stands out distinctly compared to any previous HAIM release. This energy is also captured in ‘Million Years’, one of the album's mid-tracks that features a lively Björk-inspired sound enriched with danceable snare beats, serving as further evidence that ‘I Quit’ incorporates a variety of 90s musical elements within its fifteen tracks, acting like a revived time capsule.
‘Now it’s time’ wraps up the album's lyrical journey by celebrating sisterhood, especially in the context of romantic breakups and personal reflection, through uplifting lyrics that emphasize the art of moving on. The introduction of ‘Numb’ – one of U2’s most experimental tracks – is sampled in the first half of the song as Danielle echoes Bono’s murmured affirmations from the original produced by Brian Eno. Ultimately, ‘I Quit’ closes with the same psychedelic, distorted sound associated with the Manchester music scene that characterized the album’s beginning, bringing listeners full circle. This album represents one of modern rock’s best-kept secrets at their peak, a band on the verge of selling out stadiums.
