Honoring My Punk Soul Sister Brix Smith

Zoe Kalar of WeAre8 writes for CLASH...

I encountered Brix Smith at a Marylebone street market, quite by chance, three Saturdays in a row, in precisely the same location. It felt like a ‘Doctor Who’ vortex, as if we were destined to have a conversation. When we finally spoke—me in an 8 cap, her with an 8 tattoo—we instantly connected over the fruit stand.

Life often seems to be filled with coincidences—or perhaps it's fate bringing us together?

Brix is renowned as the exceptional lead guitarist of the post-punk band The Fall, but she is so much more than that. Truly, she is incredibly multifaceted. I consider myself fortunate to call her a friend—more like a spiritual soul sister.

She embodies coolness in every possible way, radiating a whirlwind of creative energy. Brix is a poet, author, songwriter, artist, musician, lyricist, psychic, perfumer, and jewelry designer—she knows just how to modify a t-shirt, add a belt, or tweak a lyric to give everything a distinctive flair. She inspires me to express myself fully, and we share a lot of laughter, which is, in all honesty, a remedy for everything.

To me, Brix resembles Pegasus; with just a flick of her hoof, creativity bursts forth from her in myriad ways. Watching this unfold is both beautiful and remarkable.

I cherish the time spent with Brix—together we elevate our minds, connect, and dream. There’s no pressure involved; we might not see each other for months, but when we do, we seamlessly pick up right where we left off. The lack of pressure or judgment is what makes our friendship special. Her lovely song “Changing” explores her self-worth over time, echoing our journey of self-discovery. The brilliance of her lyrics can shift your perspective in new ways.

She sings, “I don’t wanna be the poisoned branch on your barren tree,” then pauses to say, “We’re changing the way it is, because it’s time for us all to feel value and rise—together.”

And that resonates with the essence of 8.

I adore you, Brix Smith. Here’s to you, inspiring the world with your Pegasus-like angelic wings, as we all soar into freedom together. I might just have to follow suit and get that 8 tattoo after all.
