Blood Orange Reaches Sublime Levels With ‘The Field’

      An exceptionally impressive comeback...

Initially, the announcement of Blood Orange's first release in three years might give the impression that Dev Hynes has been out of the public eye. However, if you look deeper, you'll see an artist who is deeply embedded in the mainstream, effectively connecting his concepts with broad audiences. The songwriter served as Music Director for Harry Styles’ Grammy rendition of ‘Watermelon Sugar’ and received a Latin Grammy for his work on Nathy Peluso's track ‘El Día Que Perdí Mi Juventud’. Just this year, he has collaborated with Lorde and TURNSTILE, while his own song ‘Coastal Grooves’ achieved Gold status following a significant viral success on TikTok.

Though he hasn’t been idle, the anticipation for new music from Blood Orange is thrilling – the new track 'The Field' is stunning, easily among his finest, adding an extra touch of brilliance.

The beautiful guitar loops evoke The Durutti Column, while Caroline Polachek’s vocals highlight the sensitive, emotive qualities of her artistry.

This song showcases excellent songwriting, drawing from various genres while refusing to be confined – the influence of Daniel Caesar's R&B can be felt throughout, yet elements of Dev Hynes' indie roots are also traceable.

Dev Hynes directed the video as well, which is bound to tug at your heartstrings – it’s a mesmerizing viewing experience from a true multi-talented artist.

So, where does this point to? Is a Blood Orange album on the way? It’s uncertain – but we can confidently say that ‘The Field’ is exceptionally exciting.

      Our rating? 9/10.
