The soul artist from Sydney, Natalie Slade, offers a preview of her anticipated Molasses album. “Unquenchable Craving,” her initial collaboration with producer/arranger Sampology, merges future soul and broken beat into a nearly spiritual experience—imbued with a pulsing energy that doesn't fully allow her to let go of her worries.

A twinkling synth loop initiates the track, precise and clear, reminiscent of light refracting in cut glass. After a brief, playful introduction, the music expands. Resounding grand piano chords stabilize the mids and lows, while an energetic drum kit bursts with chaotic and captivating vitality. It's difficult to label a rhythm that feels so vibrant as “broken”; this is certainly a blend of chaotic yet calming broken-beat brilliance. As Slade begins to sing, it seems she’s reaching for something lofty, near the ceiling, invoking an operatic quality.

Her voice changes according to the moment. During the hook, she sings in a soaring soprano, floating effortlessly with air in her notes. There is a cinematic quality to her phrase, “It’s no wonder we’re praying, unquenchable craving,” which resonates with a sense of devotion and feels as if it’s drawn from a spiritual experience.

In contrast, the verses come in more sharply. Her tone is concise and rhythmic, grounding itself in raw honesty: “Sugar sex, credit cards, go to sleep, wake up hard.” The rhythm evokes spoken word and old-school hip-hop, wrapped in themes of addiction, consumerism, and the unending desire for fulfillment.

Natalie Slade’s ‘Molasses’ is set to be released on August 8, 2025, through BBE Music! Directed by Dominique Berns, the music video for “Unquenchable Craving” adopts a minimalist approach: colors are subdued as Slade walks along city sidewalks directly towards the camera. Her outfits and surroundings change rapidly, resembling scenes fast-forwarded in a film. Time appears to be moving, yet she seems caught in a repetitive cycle.

The structure of “Unquenchable Craving” ebbs and flows. The keys and strings peak and dissolve at the midpoint, creating space for a central prayer to resonate. The beat returns, sharper and more defined, and the final chorus does not merely repeat but elevates, accompanied by a singular swell of violin, causing everything to shine more brightly.

Ultimately, it all fades away—cleanly and abruptly—leaving you with outstretched hands, yearning for another moment to dwell in what has just eluded your grasp.
