Jouska Reveals Upcoming Album ‘How Did I Wind Up Here?’

The new album ‘How Did I Wind Up Here?’ by Jouska is set to be released on October 17th.

The artist, whose real name is Marit Othilie Thorvik, gained recognition with her second album ‘Suddenly My Mind Is Blank’, which featured intricately crafted musicality paired with authentic lyrical depth.

Releasing on October 17th, ‘How Did I Wind Up Here?’ expands her musical scope, as Jouska incorporates a variety of influences into her sound.

Recently returning with the single ‘Flower Moon’, Jouska has now unveiled ‘Pierced.’ This track, imbued with a sense of darkness, also features a backdrop of shoegaze-inspired guitar sounds.

In her commentary on the song, Jouska shares…

This song emerged from the shame associated with being noticed at all. I’ve always had a difficult relationship with visibility. A part of me yearns to be seen and heard, while another longs to fade away. Creating art magnifies that conflict. I often feel like I’m stepping into a role that feels misaligned, revealing aspects of myself that I prefer to keep concealed. It feels deeply personal, too raw, and frequently uncomfortable.

This track encapsulates that sensation. I co-wrote it with my partner Hans Olav Settem, who contributes guitar, bass, and synths. The drums combine both live and programmed elements, played by Elias Tafjord (Sassy 009, Why Kai), along with Bård Kristian Kylland (Giddygang) on Rhodes. The song navigates a darker, hypnotic atmosphere, influenced by the music from my childhood, such as Massive Attack and Portishead, intertwined with shoegaze and noise rock elements. The arrangement is minimal and repetitive, creating an almost meditative experience. It’s intense, yet oddly sensual.
