At first glance, the name of the Australian trio Folk Bitch Trio accurately reflects their identity: there are indeed three members—Heide Peverelle, Jeanie Pilkington, and Grace Sinclair—and they promote a folk sound enriched by Americana, classic rock, and ballads. The opening track, ‘God’s a Different Sword’, creates a warm atmosphere with its mellow strumming that complements the intertwining vocals of the trio. With lines like “Am I lucky? Or am I just sane?” and “Can’t deny it, my body keeps the score / But if you tell me that you need it / I can get up off my floor,” they demonstrate a thoughtful sense of humor. Their intimate vibe remains throughout the album, even as they share candid narratives, like seeking solace from an intrusive dream on ‘Hotel TV’ and navigating the ups and downs of a breakup on ‘The Actor’.
Even in their more stripped-back songs—such as ‘Moth Song’ and ‘I’ll Find A Way’—the band conveys deep emotion through their harmonious blend. This is particularly evident in ‘That’s All She Wrote’, where a simple, repetitive acoustic strum works in harmony with gentle string arrangements to tell the story. Lines like “My legs are hanging all over the place / Your head down my skirt, you really know me / But I can’t wait to get back home / You’re right here with me / But I feel so alone” capture the tension between physical intimacy and emotional disconnect, marking one of the album's high points. The vulnerable closing track, ‘Mary’s Playing The Harp’, chronicles an on-tour breakup and serves as a poignant conclusion—open-hearted and wounded, much like the album as a whole. The track ‘Now Would Be A Good Time’ encapsulates a blend of power and humor amid the chaos.
