It’s rare to confidently assert that a new band or artist lacks any true contemporaries, but since their debut in 2023, Brighton-based quartet The New Eves have carved out a unique niche for themselves. Positioned - or perhaps more accurately, poised - at the intersection of ancient folk traditions and experimental rock, the band offers a distinct and multi-faceted experience, evoking influences from The Wicker Man and Angela Carter, alongside Patti Smith, The Slits, and The Velvet Underground. And as far as debut statements go, you can't get more evocative than their first offering. The pseudo-title track 'The New Eve' feels more like an incantation than a conventional song, presenting a captivating, preacher-like proclamation of the complexities of modern womanhood: within this context, The New Eve "spits out the seeds from the fruit of the forbidden tree / And then she plants them, carefully"; she also "eats baked beans." From rich biblical references and distorted pastoral imagery (‘Cow Song’) to intense string-led crescendos (‘Highway Man’) and frantic invocations (‘Circles’; ‘Mary’), the nine tracks manage to embody significant strength without ever feeling burdensome. In fact, ‘The New Eve Is Rising’ conveys a sense of playfulness in challenging norms and theatricality. If the title suggests anything, it indicates that this is only the beginning.
Since releasing their debut single in 2023, the Brighton-based quartet The New Eves have cultivated a devoted following thanks to their wonderfully offbeat, genre-defying creations. With their first album, ‘The New Eve Is Rising,’ the band is expanding their musical range even more.
