Formed by Pip Blom and Willem Smit of Personal Trainer, the Amsterdam-based project Long Fling has officially made its debut.
The city boasts a tight-knit yet vibrantly creative indie rock scene, a characteristic that Clash has thoroughly enjoyed exploring over the years.
Pip Blom has long been a favorite, while Personal Trainer, fronted by Willem Smit, is also worth discovering. Remarkably, the two are good friends who have been exchanging ideas for a decade.
These discussions culminated in the formation of Long Fling. The band’s eponymous debut album is set to be released on October 3rd, following their initial live performance at Amsterdam’s London Calling festival.
Willem reflects: “Throughout the years, I believe we’ve become more at ease collaborating on music… Creating a record that we unintentionally crafted without the specific aim of recording was both enjoyable and strange. At times, it felt reminiscent of archaeology. We attempted to alter things… but quickly realized it was best to remain faithful to our original concepts.”
Pip adds: “We had never handled everything, including the mixing, ourselves before. This time, I think we both felt confident doing it together because we were in it together, accepting that the album didn’t need to be excessively polished or flawless… When we asked our dads if the album sounded more like a Willem album or a Pip album, they both said the other name. I genuinely feel we created this album as a team – it’s a true fusion of both of us.”
The new single ‘Flung’ is available now – clever and sharp indie pop that delights in the unexpected.
