‘Learning Greek’ kicks off with an intense barrage, with ‘Neighbours’ unleashing a post-hardcore, mosh-pit-inducing anthem that tells the grim story of a protagonist gripped by paranoia, convinced that sinister forces are after them. This debut album marks a shift for the Glasgow band, moving slightly away from their early art-punk roots and suggesting greater crossover potential. The latter part of the album showcases some of its most compelling tracks—such as the biting post-punk of ‘I Knew We Would Talk’ and ‘Aphid’, which navigates through grunge, motorik goth-rock, and noise with ominous sci-fi elements. ‘Memorial’ takes on a pop-punk vibe, reminiscent of a track suitable for a Tony Hawk soundtrack that might spill your drink. Similar gritty influences are present in ‘Plagiarist’, which merges surf-rock sounds like those of Weezer and Pixies. The highlight, however, is ‘I Only Have Eyes’; a track that captures the band's versatility by weaving jangly, ethereal dream-pop with Andreas Christodoulidis’ powerful growl, showcasing Humour at their finest. A strong debut LP that targets both dive bars and festival settings.
