Victoria Canal Discloses Experiences of Sexual Abuse and Grooming

Victoria Canal has released a statement detailing her experiences with sexual abuse and grooming within the music industry.

An acclaimed songwriter, she has received recognition such as an Ivor Novello award, performed alongside Coldplay at Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, and finished her debut album ‘Slowly, It Dawns’.

As she turns 27 this week, Victoria Canal chose to present “a gift to myself” by sharing a revealing statement on social media that highlights her experiences as a woman in music.

In her statement, she recalls being groomed by a “very powerful, decades-older man” in the industry, who offered her her first professional opportunity.

Though the individual remains unnamed, he appears to be “loving, charismatic, and principled” on the surface, concealing a “history of incredibly damaging behavior.”

During lengthy walks early in their professional relationship, this person gradually began introducing “sexual topics.” Victoria Canal explains that he would insist she sleep in his bed, touch her without consent while she was on the tour bus, and take photos of her “without my awareness or consent.”

Describing the feeling of being “isolated” in an unfamiliar setting, she articulates the “terrorizing confusion of grooming.”

“The truth is,” she asserts, “that I couldn’t go on hiding this part of me.”
