dodie has revealed her second album, ‘Not For Lack of Trying’, set to be released on October 3rd through Decca Records.
‘I Feel Bad For You, Dave’ is the second single from the album, following last month’s release of ‘I’M FINE’. The bossa nova-inspired track is “a song about the ego of individuals who feel powerless and attempt to regain control in ways that ironically counteract their intent. We all know a Dave!”
The single also acts as a powerful response to online aggressors after she witnessed her close friend face racist harassment. “I didn’t know how to respond—I felt like dragging them down, replying to them, and making videos about them,” she recalls. “And I was like, ‘OK, I can’t do any of that, so I’ll write a song.’”
With most of the writing done between London and Los Angeles and produced by Joe Rubel (Maisie Peters, Griff, Sigrid), ‘Not For Lack Of Trying’ has been a long time in the making. dodie took three years to reflect and write what she describes as the “sibling” to her praised 2021 debut ‘Build A Problem’, incorporating her thoughts on topics such as love, breakups, comparison culture, and battling depression.
“‘Not For Lack Of Trying’ is very straightforward, very sad, and it portrays a picture of all these songs of me trying to understand everything,” she describes.
The English artist rose to prominence with her captivating recordings, merging bedroom pop elements with introspective themes. ‘Build A Problem’ reached the Top 10 upon its release in 2021.
