An ode to love as a risk worth taking, Nashville duo The Prickly Pair’s “Winsome Lose Some Game” presents a heartfelt country-infused duet that explores intimacy, risk, and commitment, blending emotional harmonies with beautifully timeless narratives.
“Winsome Lose Some Game” – The Prickly Pair
Some forms of love shine without any polishing. They are raw, messy, and honest—filled with the imperfections and quirks that make them genuine. “Winsome Lose Some Game” embraces this truth: a playful and sincere acknowledgment of devotion in all its flawed glory, where love thrives not despite our imperfections, but because of them. With warm harmonies and sweet poignancy, The Prickly Pair welcome us into a space that feels both timeless and intimate. It’s the type of song you might hear softly drifting from a back porch at twilight, or echoing like a secret shared between two lovers. It’s tender, vulnerable, and completely disarming: an ode to love as a worthwhile gamble.
“Winsome Lose Some Game” – The Prickly Pair
My rose-tinted glasses
Fell to the ground
Now I’ve seen the true you
I no longer need illusion around
Atwood Magazine is excited to premiere “Winsome Lose Some Game,” the lead single and opening track from The Prickly Pair’s forthcoming self-titled EP, set to release on October 24, 2025. East Nashville duo Irene Greene and Mason Summit characterize their sound as “Angsty Americana,” blending traditional country elements with a diverse range of influences from Fiona Apple to Gram Parsons, Patsy Cline to Brian Wilson. Produced by Summit, the EP highlights their talent in transforming human stories—both real and imagined—into vibrant, emotionally resonant songwriting.
I peered behind your curtain
And I’m certain
You’re the one I’m searching for
So don’t try to change
Including the tattoo of their name
Oh, love is a winsome lose some game
The music video for “Winsome Lose Some Game” encapsulates the song's intimacy: two voices blending in harmony, elegantly dressed while simply standing side by side. Mason holds a guitar, and Irene’s voice rises to meet his, both glowing under warm yellow illumination against intricate wallpaper. It could be a living room or a lounge, but either way, it feels homely. This is the beauty of The Prickly Pair: their music focuses on connection rather than spectacle, offering a glimpse into the private world of two people in love.

“I think this song is about loving and accepting someone for who they are,” Irene Greene shares with Atwood Magazine. “Sometimes it’s uncertain, but when you meet the right person, you’ll love them fully, despite their flaws. It’s a playful song you’d sing to serenade a lover.” Mason Summit adds, “After opening for Jeff Plankenhorn at McCabe’s last year, we invited him to play lead on this one. I introduced the ‘clip-clop’ percussion to give it a Western vibe, inspired by Judee Sill.” That Western rhythm underpins the track, anchoring its tender message in a beat that moves steadily forward, imperfections and all.
Lyrics like “I got a peek behind your curtain / And I’m certain you’re still the one I’m searching for” cut straight to the essence of devotion, recognizing both vulnerability and acceptance. Later, when they sing “I want you lock, stock, and barrel / At my peril / I hold my breath and take the plunge,” the risk of love turns into its own reward. The chorus – “Love is a winsome lose some game” – resonates like a mantra, playful yet poignant, wise in its simplicity.
The Prickly Pair EP will be released on October 24, 2025.
Don’t fool a fool
My heart isn’t a blank check
You’re tilting the odds
The devil’s breathing down your neck
I want you lock, stock, and barrel
At my peril
I hold my breath and dive in
I know I’ve been framed
But I’ll choose you just the same
Oh, love is a winsome lose some game
Oh well, now, love is a winsome lose some game
Love is a winsome lose some game
