While the latter part of their name may be in need of an update, the Backstreet Boys still exhibit plenty of youthful vigor and ambition, especially noticeable in their recently-extended Las Vegas residency. A key factor in their continued success in the latter part of their careers—just as he has been throughout their 30-plus years—has been their dependable vocalist, Nick Carter. Ever since he faced the pivotal choice at age 12 between joining The Mickey Mouse Club or the Backstreet Boys, Carter has remained a dedicated member of one of the best-selling pop groups in history, also taking time to produce four solo albums along the way.

The most recent of these, and his first in a decade, was released on May 15. LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY showcases Carter's gift for emotionally charged lyrics, with a lighter touch through comic book elements. He has produced a series of illustrated music videos that depict the main themes and stories of the album, along with a graphic novel series that brings these visuals into print. It’s clear that Carter has had much on his mind in recent years and is eager to express it through various formats.
“This album is not solely about love, life, and tragedy, but also about the beauty that can emerge from them,” he explains to Atwood Magazine. “This is the most vulnerable material I’ve ever put out, and it’s cathartic to share my story this way. The LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY album is a tribute to everyone who has loved and supported me for who I am—the artist, the husband, the father, the human being. I am very proud of this album and can’t wait to share it.”
Carter elaborates on his significant return to solo music and his long-standing dedication to the Backstreet Boys in the following interview with Atwood Magazine.

A CONVERSATION WITH NICK CARTER
Atwood Magazine: What was your vision when you started creating your new album, LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY? In what ways does the final product fulfill that vision?
Nick Carter: When I first began working on the album, I hadn’t yet thought of the name LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY. Originally, I aimed to create an album called “Who I Am,” which was also the title of my most recent solo tour. Having spent over three decades in the music industry, I sometimes feel that people still don’t fully know me. Thus, this album is very personal and reflects who I am as both an artist and an individual.
The album centers on the shared human experiences we all encounter regarding love, heartbreak, and life in general. I envisioned something cinematic and emotional, a project that takes listeners through various chapters of life. I’m thankful that people globally have connected with the album.
Currently, the latest music video you’ve released from LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY is “Searchlight.” How does this track represent the music and themes of the rest of the album?
Nick Carter: “Searchlight” encapsulates the essence of the album. It’s about love and the journey of finding your way in dark times. The search for hope or light is a recurring theme throughout the entire project, which is something everyone can relate to in life.
You’ve mentioned that one of your goals for this project was to create beautiful music based on your life experiences, despite many of them being painful. Can you identify specific parts of the album where you feel you achieved that goal particularly well?
Nick Carter: That was one of my biggest intentions for the album. I wanted to transform real-life struggles into something beautiful and meaningful. A song like “Hurts to Love You” stands out for me in that aspect. It came from a deeply personal place, but writing it helped me process many emotions I had been holding onto.
Another example is “Hey Kid.” This track serves as a letter to my younger self, sharing lessons I wish I had learned earlier. Writing it was emotional but also therapeutic. I believe these types of songs truly capture what I set out to accomplish. I wanted to be honest, even when it was difficult, and hopefully create something others could relate to as well.
Since it's been ten years since your last solo album, how does LOVE LIFE TRAGEDY build upon your previous records now that you've relaunched your solo career?
Nick Carter: This album feels more mature and vulnerable than any prior work. Many life events over the past decade have influenced this growth, and I believe that evolution is reflected in the
