British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Ego Ella May has released her latest single, ‘What We Do’. This track marks the first release from her upcoming second album, set to debut in early 2026.
Following her acclaimed 2020 debut ‘Honey For Wounds’, ‘What We Do’ was co-produced with South London artist Wu-Lu. The song captures the thrill of anticipation between lovers reuniting and provides Ego with a chance to emphasize a sense of softness and lightness.
Ego Ella May explains the inspiration behind the new track: “This song originated when I began the intentional process of creating this album. While I was at Real World Studios in Bath with my band—a wonderful environment for writing and connecting with my team—I found myself really missing my partner! I wrote about how thrilled I was for our reunion! It's a groove-driven, fun song, and I don't often have the opportunity to write in that vein, so I aimed for the subject to be lighthearted and reflective of the music’s vibe. I collaborated with Wu-Lu on this piece, who also contributes some vocals at the track's end (what a treat!), and for those familiar with Wu-Lu’s style, this track undeniably showcases his unique sound. I cherish this collaboration even more because it encouraged me to create a track like this, which I didn't think I could produce! The song exudes a carefree, fun, ride-with-the-top-down vibe, and I absolutely adore it!”
Ego Ella May blends R&B and neo-soul while deeply appreciating jazz influences. Her debut album, ‘Honey For Wounds’, combined soulful jazz, R&B, and neo-soul with poignant insights on self-healing, protest, love, and loss.
In celebration of the five-year anniversary of its release, Ego Ella May recently launched a limited anniversary edition of the album. ‘Honey For Wounds – 5 Year Anniversary Edition’ is available for purchase on Bandcamp.
