Oasis (At Last) Conquers America: A Close Encounter at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena

In 2025, is there anything new to say about Oasis that hasn't been expressed numerous times before? Not really, except for this: there will always be only one.

Amidst the clash of opinions labeling them either the “greatest ever” or “most overrated,” the Gallagher Brothers have chosen to set aside their differences. The discussion about their status in music no longer holds weight—those conversations were meant for a time when the band was inactive. What truly matters now is that they are back with the most significant concert series this year.

Over the weekend (September 6th and 7th), the Manchester band performed two nights at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium, marking the conclusion of their North American tour. The exuberant atmosphere, boisterous drinking culture, and a sea of Adidas Originals apparel created a vibe typically unseen in the U.S., yet it felt entirely fitting in that context.

American audiences don’t react or engage like those attending Oasis shows. Their fan base is truly diverse, consisting of individuals from various backgrounds, colors, and ages coming together for raw rock 'n' roll. From 50-year-old men to middle-school girls sporting shorts, bucket hats, and light-blue shirts (many Americans might be unaware of who they’re actually cheering for)—this is what true unity looks like, some may say.

As their reunion tour progresses, Noel and Liam appear to have stepped comfortably back into their roles. From the Pasadena performances alone, it’s evident that this is exactly how fans want it. Between 2009 and 2024, many Oasis enthusiasts enjoyed Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Beady Eye, and Liam Gallagher’s solo endeavors. While significant portions of that work were impressive, none matched the thrill of witnessing both brothers side by side.

Sir Paul McCartney attended the first night in Southern California, watching proudly as if he were a father. The Beatles undeniably inspired Oasis, making McCartney's presence a powerful indication of the magnitude of this reunion.

In 2014, Dave Grohl commented on the band, saying, “We’ve played shows with them before where I look at them and think, ‘That’s the greatest rock band I’ve ever seen in my life.’ They just stand there; they’re not bouncing around the stage.”

Discussions about the “greatest” feel redundant in realms where success cannot be measured. After all, one can’t truly win in music. Yet, Oasis has come closest to achieving a form of triumph in music over the years. Echoing Grohl’s sentiments, Noel and Liam don’t need to strive to embody rock ‘n’ roll; they simply are, regardless of their actions. Their success was sealed before they even stepped on stage that first night in Cardiff; now, they just need to continue sharing their message.

This tour is tailored specifically for longtime fans. The majority of their setlist features tracks from ‘Definitely Maybe,’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?,’ and the B-sides compilation ‘The Masterplan.’ From their last four albums, Oasis only included ‘Little by Little,’ a selection that hardly represents their best work. The lack of tracks like ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out,’ ‘Layla,’ and ‘Gas Panic!’ made the inclusion of songs such as ‘Bring It On Down,’ ‘Fade Away,’ and ‘Half the World Away’ seem excessive. Perhaps they are reserving some favorites for later, as despite the excellence of their sets, they still feel like part one of a much larger experience.

The average Oasis fan holds a deeper appreciation for the band’s discography than Noel does, who fairly champions the first two albums but doesn’t give adequate credit to the rest (which is atypical since he wrote most of the songs). Given this, it would be disappointing for them to reunite and not delve further into their catalogue if these concerts continue. They’ve given fans a glimpse, and the desire for more is only growing.

This cannot be the end. It better not be.
